My foster cat is having kitties!

For the first time I've become a foster Mum to a cat through Cat's Protection (I also have two of my own).

She was stray and run over by a car about six weeks ago which broke her ribs so she came to mine to live while her ribs healed and then was to be put up for adoption.

Last weekend she started becoming a bit defensive and grumpy and was cowering away. I was concerned that she was in pain so took her to the vets who thought she might have a hernia...

She went back in on Weds and it's not a hernia...its 5 or 6 little kitties!!!

So she was a combination of hormonal and probably the growing kitties were making her healing ribs uncomfortable.

She's around six weeks gone so must have conceived just before her accident. Now we are hoping all goes well since she's had pain meds and x-Ray's while pregnant which wouldn't usually be advisable.

Anyway I plan to update with pics along the way...we are very excited!

She's a beautiful girl. smile

What is the vet's view on continuing with the pregnancy?

The vet said she may have some discomfort when the kittens have a growth spurt due to her ribs not being 100% healed but that she will otherwise be fine.

I asked about potential impacts of the pain medication she was on before anyone knew she was pregnant. They said that there is a small chance that some of the kittens could have deformities such as fused claws (I guess this is the cat equivalent of webbed toes?).

I asked about whether it was in her best interests to continue but they were quite clear that she should be fine other than a bit of intermittent discomfort and they did not recommend termination.

As it happens she hasn't shown any more signs of pain this week and has very much been back to her usual affectionate self.

They don't believe this is her first litter (due to the number of kittens).

And she is beautiful! The pics don't do her justice...she looks just like the smokey gray Sheba ad cat.

Such a shame that she was stray! The vet thinks she was stray for a long time, perhaps even since she was quite young (she's around three now at a best guess).

Beautiful cat. So sad that she was a stray. But lucky to be fostered by a good home now.

The Lodger was chucked out into the street when he was a kitten when his owners moved. He was lucky though. He managed to raise himself (and his 9,999 lives helped) and then decided to move in with us. The rest is history.

Let's hope that her life has turned also. smile

Aw, best of luck to her. My Habibi girl had a litter as a young stray while very sick and malnourished: at least she's getting the proper care now. Bibi's experience has left her none the worse, she's a happy, healthy and very bossy 4-yr old now.

Pity you can't get gas and air for cats.
