The litter tray

Just lost my old girl

Posted on here a couple of days ago about what to feed my elderly 18 yr old cat. Sadly this morning I had to take her to the vets and make the heart breaking decision to put her to sleep. She went into chronic heart failure.
The vet said we could try and treat her but it most likely wouldn't be successful. Or take her home and she would take a couple of weeks to die. Or have her put to sleep at the surgery, which was what he recommended. It was a horrible decision and not the ending I wanted for her, it wasn't a particulary peaceful end as she was struggling for breathSad
I know she had a long happy life with us but just feel so sad today, I am very tearful and wish it could have been a better ending. Really I wanted her to go to sleep at home and not wake up but being a typical cat she did it the hard way!
Sorry for long post I just wanted to get it down.

I'm so sorry to hear this OP Flowers.

It's so hard, but as another MNer said to me when I lost my old boy - just think how amazing her life must have been to have been so loved for so long.

Sorry to hear this. I had to let my old boy go in similar circumstances 14 years ago. Sending lots of love, you know you did the right thing at the right time

Thank you. Yes that is a lovely way of looking at it. She was loved and I know she had a happy life. Olivia I would love to tell you a bit about her, thank you.
She had a few near misses in her 18 years but she bounced back each time. She was a tiny little thing, rescued from a horrible environment where she lived in squalor and fed on cheap baked beansSad which was probably why she was so small. We had her from 1 yr old and although very timid at first she became confident and a typical demanding cat!
She used to love sleeping in crazy places, in amongst my boys lego, on top of radiators, tucked in by a pair of smelly trainersConfused and she had a very loud mew for such a small cat! We have a large garden which she spent a lot of time in, most of all she liked waiting in the front garden in a patch of sunshine for us to come home, when she'd trot across the grass mewing loudly! She was a real character. Never ever scratched on purpose but would occasionally bite your toe as she walked past!!
Poor old girl struggling at the end. At least she is at peace now.

She sounds amazing! What a lovely life she had. She loved you and was loved in return.

My baby boy was ill and struggled at the end. You have to do what is best for them. Like you, I know now he is in peace and I remember all the good times.

Oh posie, I remember you asking about food just a few days back. Your old girl sounds such a character. (Ours is also teeny but loud - she likes to stand on the stairs and shout.)

Thank you. I am overwhelmed by everyone's lovely comments. It has helped a great deal today. We were just chatting with our two DS about our happy memories of her. We are having her individually cremated and will bury the little box of ashes in the front garden where she loved to sleep.

She sounds like such a character. It may not have been the ending you wanted but I bet she had the life with you she would have chosen. Hang on to those happy memories. They will stay with you forever and may they be a comfort.

You did the right thing, heartbreaking as it is. We kept one alive longer than we should & I still wish my dad had put his foot down and made DM pts.

You can be proud you did the right thing for her from the moment she was rescued to the final vet visit.

Thank you fluffy sorry to hear that about your old cat but that is also comforting to hear, my DM was reminding me that they kept one of our family cats alive longer than they should have and she did suffer longer than was necessarySad so I am glad that I saved her from that - the vet said I had made the right choice - it was so difficult but I felt I had made the kindest choice. Olivia no other cats, I got her when DH first went off to sea (he used to be in the Navy) she kept me companySmile. DH not so impressed when he got home, but she worked her way into his heart!

So sorry to hear this Posie but it sounds like you made the right decision. I had 2 old cats and they both died aged 18, the first time we definitely left it a bit too late and I still regret that. Mine had been in my life since they were kittens and it is really strange without them & their funny little ways, even though we have another, young, cat now
