My beautiful, fluffy, tabby cat died today. Found by a neighbour and put into a box for me so we can Bury her tomorrow.

Me and the kids are devastated.

She was 5. Very much one of the family.

I'm stupidly upset and keep crying. It's going to be a long night. Thank God the youngest is in with me tonight. Lots of cuddles.

Very sorry for your loss, nothing stupid about being upset to lose your cat like this. Flowers

Really sorry to read that, it is awful to lose a loved pet and never stupid to be upset. I lost my cat, Jaycee, many years ago - the man whose car hit her who so very upset. I really admired him for bringing her home, it must have been so difficult for him.

She was found by the children of a woman a few doors away from me. Good introduction to a new neighbour, sobbing on her shoulder.

I've just put pics up on Facebook, silly ones of her sitting in a tissue box and lying upside down. She was a real character and the running joke in our house was that she hated me. I've just looked at the pics and realised I'll never rub her fluffy chest again.

Oh no, so sorry to hear, what a horrible shock for you. Not stupid at all to be sad, for most of us animal lovers, our pets are family BrewFlowers

Thanks everyone.

DS1 is sitting in front of me playing minecraft with his friend. I don't have the heart to send him to bed yet because he'll lie awake and get upset.

Oh, I am so very sorry. It's such a dreadful thing to happen :( My cat was run over earlier this year - he was nearly 3. We are still heartbroken about it

We had a burial ceremony and put some of his favourite things in the grave with him which helped a bit. I talk to him when I'm gardening

A burial ceremony sounds lovely, Lynda.

DD is at her friends house tonight so we're doing the burying tomorrow. DD wants to be able to say goodbye first.

My cat was really unwell last year. I had to force water down her for two days and the vet told me she would have died had I not. Then she had a terrible ingestion in one of her paws and had to have steroid tablets twice a day. The past few months she has put weight on and been such a happy little cat. It makes it worse that she was finally well and happy.

I think it's important you all say goodbye. Can you gather things she liked until your DD is home? Would that help your DS? We buried bits of twig and dreamies and a couple of lego heads (favourite toy) and a catnip mouse.

Mine went missing for 3 months and we'd given him up for dead and then I got a call from a vet nearly 15 miles away and he'd turned up there somehow. We still don't know what happened but after he was killed I decided he was the sort of cat who wasn't destined to live a long life. He was a live fast, die young soul. And we snatched him back the first time but it was never going to last.

That makes me sound like a total hippy but it has helped to explain to DS and allay his fears about our other pets.

The thing she liked best was DD! She also had a catnip mouse which has disappeared recently so I'll try and find that to go in her box with her. I'm going to tuck an old blanket round her to kind of soften the box, if that makes sense.

DS1 is a very sensitive soul, despite being very tough on the outside and I think he's going to be very wobbly tomorrow when his friend goes home. I don't have to go anywhere luckily so we can all have time together.

So sorry. It is the reason I stopped having cats. We live in the country on a very quite road but kept getting them knocked over. Only one survived and died about five years later due to her injuries. All except one of ours were only a year old. The kids loved them and were devastated each time. We waited a long time before getting another. Last time I said no more. Only daughter has one at her house. She lives on the busiest road you can imagine but that cat stays in the back yard and never ventures out. She was a rescue cat so were some of ours. We planted special bushes.

So sorry to hear this. One of my first girl cats was knocked down and killed and I cried on and off for weeks. I hope today goes as well as it can and that the burial ceremony brings some sort of comfort. There is nothing stupid about mourning someone you lost, even if that someone was a cat.

Thanks for the kind words everyone.

We've buried her in the garden today, near the path so that I can talk to her when I hang the washing out. DS1 helped with the initial digging and did pretty much all the filling in himself. He was determined to do it and I think it helped him. She was wrapped in a pillow case with some flowers and her toy mouse. We all threw some dirt in and said our goodbyes. Lots of tears but I reminded all the children to think about the good times we had with her and remember her silly little ways.

I bought a rose bush which we have planted on top of her so it's now 'Ruby's Rose bush' and it means we have a permanent visual marker for her.

Emotional but I feel some sense of closure today.

I'm so sorry to hear this. We have buried several cats over the years. On a purely practical note for the first couple of months I would weigh down the top of the grave with something heavy because foxes can try and dig down and that's something you absolutely don't want to have to deal with when you're mourning.
Thinking of you. It's so hard to lose a loved pet. Hugs.
