The litter tray

I think LandingCat may be nearing the end

He's had various health problems in the last few years (tummy, teeth) and is a small, skinny boy at the best of times. His weight has been borderline worrying the last two years but this is the first time he's seemed really ill and unhappy.

He hasn't eaten properly in a couple of weeks but we thought he'd just got a bit spoiled over Christmas (he got plenty prawns, turkey etc and scoffed the lot) and was turning his nose up at big standard cat food, so we tried a couple of new types and he seemed a bit more interested, but still didn't eat a whole portion. This last few days though he's not even been tempted by poached fish or tuna (his very favourite human food) and has seemed pretty miserable. He's suddenly very very skinny, He's also swaying slightly when he stands and struggling to get up/down on his spot on the back of the sofa, and tonight he cried when he used the litter tray. He smells a bit too.

He's 18 years old, has had a long, happy, mostly healthy life and I should be ready to let him go but I'm absolutely dreading going to the vets tomorrow. He's my oldest baby. I've known him longer than DH. I feel like he's gone downhill so quickly I can't get my head round it.

Poor landingcat and poor you! It is so hard but you have to do what's right for them. Everyone always says you'll know when it is time but that doesn't make it any easier. Squeezes for landingcat - you have my sympathy.

Bless you. We lost our 19 year old girl last year. It was really hard. But she was not herself. She was ill. We couldn't fix it for her.

I'm in the same boat and it's grim.

But, see what the vet says. crying when he uses the litter tray might suggest a UTI which has put him off his food and could be treated. Fingers xed!

So sorry. See what the vet says tomorrow. Both of my oldies made it to 18, it is a very good age.

I hope things go as well as they can do. My boy is 16 so I understand - we've been together for a third of my life.

Thanks for all your support last night, everyone. We took LandingCat to the vet this morning (DH took time off work to come with me) and she agreed it was kindest to help him go, so we said our goodbyes and stayed with him to see him off. It's the best thing for him but my goodness the house feels quiet and empty. We'll miss him very badly. Not looking forward to telling the DC when they get home from school.

Oh poor you! I'm so sorry to hear this. You did your best for him and it sounds like he had a lovely, long life and was very loved. A tough call but you did what was best for him I'm sure. Take care of yourselves.

Flowers Knowing you've done the right thing by him doesn't mean it's not a terrible wrench.

You have done the right thing but that doesn't mean it isn't sad. He knew you loved him and you'll never forget him.

I'm so sorry. One of my girls had something similar, went right off her food and got skinny but a blood test didn't show anything wrong. She was fine in herself but it was clearly her time to go. I was lucky that I didn't have to take her to the vet, she died in her sleep the night before. It's heart breaking whatever, and I still miss her fours years on. You made the right decision though Flowers

Thanks all of you, you're really kind. It's been a very hard day but I know we did the right thing for him. I keep looking for him when I see something move out the corner of my eye though and I know the cat shaped space on my lap will feel really empty tonight.

I am so sorry. We lost our oldest girl at 19 over a year ago and it was hard, even though we knew it was absolutely the best thing for her. To this day I have to keep telling myself I can't see her waiting in the hall for me to feed her at the start of the day. Hugs and sympathy to you.

She was the last of our three moggies to go and they had a very good innings, but it has taken us until two weeks ago to take on another cat (who is lovely and it does feel good to have a cat around again).
