I am shortly going to take over the care of my DB's elderly (15?) neutered cat. He's quiet and just plods about, not apparently in distress but obviously arthritic.

His diet (as he's currently living with two 5 year old cats) is a 7+ one.

Is there anything sensible I can do for his ongoing comfort that doesn't involve ££ at the vet?

There are some environmental assists contained in this ICC guidance.

My own old boy had to go on meds at about 17 because he was just too sore to do without so I'd be liaising with your own vet fairly closely once he arrives on getting him eg his senior health checks etc.

My strongest recommendation, from experience, would be heat for him - something like a heated pad to lie on if you can afford it or even an electric blanket. (A friend or member of the family may have an unused one and they're very cheap to run.)

PS - is your DB in a position to contribute at all to his ongoing care?

Yes to the heated bed/heated pad thing - our old guy loved this which is a really cheap option.
