Effective Flea Prevention Treatment

Can anyone recommend an effective flea prevention treatment for my 20 week kitten?

Stronghold- a prescription only, monthly topical treatment that also takes care of many intestinal worms (though not tapeworm), fleas and mites.

Our vet switched us to Stronghold last autumn. It's one of the newest ones.

I had been using Frontline Combo, the vet product, religiously. Ended up with flea infestation in the house as fleas, the little feckers, had become immune to Frontline.

It was the first time in 8 years we've had fleas and it was an utterly miserable 4 weeks till I got on top of it.

I'd recommend you buy a can of Indorex or RIP Fleas too. Just to have in the house. They are household sprays. Even though our flea problem has gone, I have a light spray with one of these once a month after hoovering.

Advocate (prescription only, flea + worm treatment, not tapeworm) or Advantage ( no prescription, fleas only) both of which are spot on products containing imidacloprid as the active ingredient.

Regular Frontline has been good enough for us, but Frontline Combo better. Two things to keep in mind: make sure you really repeat at max 5 week intervals AND make sure you have the right dosage for your cat. Regular Frontline is for cats under 4kg & most cats are fatter than that.

Thanks everyone. We have gone with Program, which is an injection and lasts 6 months. It was the only injectable product used by my vets.

Were you told program doesn't kill fleas? It stops them breeding so will keep your house clear as long as all pets are treated, but you may well need to add an adulticide if your kitten goes out and picks up fleas.

Stronghold. Have used it religiously on our two for 5 yrs and have never seen anything on either of them or in the house. I get the prescription from the vet and buy online. Worth every penny.
