The litter tray

How can I make my cat more comfortable in her cone of shame?

And how long do they take to get used to having one on? Poor little thing, she is SO miserable.

Was she just spayed? My cat had a sort of babygro type thing from the vet after spaying, which was open in the back so that she could use the litter box, but covered her tummy and sides so she couldn't get at the stitches. The vet said this was normally used for tiny dogs, but he started putting them on just-spayed cats because it is a lot less traumatic than a cone. Anyway, my cat didn't mind wearing it at all. Maybe you could ask for one of those?

No, she's got a massive cut on her ear from being beaten up by another cat Sad I thought we'd get away without a cone and it was beginning to heal nicely but she's scratched the hell out of it so the cone had to go on. Unless there's some kind of beanie she could wear I don't see an alternative.

Poor her! It does make them so miserable. Not much help but when my cat had to have one we bought a softer velcro fitted one (designed for very small dogs) from the local pet shop and that did at least mean we could take it off for a short time while he was sitting with us and supervised in the evening which gave him a bit of a break, and it was a bit more comfortable. It was probably silly to spend money on it (it was about £10) but it has now been borrowed by friends cats.
Hope she heals soon

Cats heal really quickly so it shouldn't take too long. Poor girl.

Thanks all. We did try taking it off earlier to give her a break but she immediately started scratching like a maniac so it went straight back on. Still, the ear does seem to be healing well now. How long should be leave it, I wonder? Vet wasn't clear - a week maybe?

You can trim them with scissors to make them shorter. It is easier for them to get around if you make it smaller. Not so small that they can scratch the cut obviously! You can cover any sharp edges with sellotape.

Unfortunately the cut is pretty near the edge of the cone anyway - if I cut it away at all I think it will rub.

Anyway she has just shared the game sausages I had for lunch and is feeling a bit happier Grin
