How can I get my cat to go out?

After my cat spending hours wistfully looking out windows and trying to climb or jump out of 3rd floor windows and having to keep them shut in summer, when she was old enough I got her vaccinated and spayed and ready to go out. Except now she refuses to leave the house! If I try and carry her, she will claw her way to the top of my head and sit there, staying as far away from the ground as possible. When she did go on the ground and we left her out for ten minutes to see how she would do, she spent the entire time meowing outside my neighbours door.

It feels mean to keep her in when she is so into everything and I know how stimulated she will be outside. Not had a cat before that didn't love being out!

If you instate a cat-flap for her, she can decide if or when she wants to go out. Is that a possibility?

no, not a possibility at all sadly as it's a rented house and I can't modify any doors

Why does she need to go out? I don't understand.

because she gets really bored indoors and she showed all the signs of really wanting to go out before getting spayed

But she isn't showing any inclination of wanting to go out now so why force the issue? I don't mean to pick, it is just a topic that baffles me.

You can put in a cat-flap then keep the original panel. Re-instate the original door panel when you move out.

What happens if you go outside and leave the door open so she can follow? Sparklingcat didn't want to go out alone when we opened the door but wanted one of us to go in the garden with her the first few times.

On this note, we are in an upstairs flat with a glass door so no cat flap. Our cat has always gone out, day or night, no problems. Recently he has started weeing in the house, just wee, no poo so he must be doing the latter outside. I can't have a litter tray in the house - flat is too small and i hate the smell. Why is he peeing in the house now? Any thoughts?

I can't help sorry but being able to get rid of the litter tray and the accompanying awful smell would be a bonus of her going out

My cat doesn't really go out, her choice! I'm in a flat but there's a back garden bit with trees & grass, I take her out in the summer to groom her & she sometimes explores & eats the grass for a bit before running inside. Much prefers watching birds etc out the window, shows no interest in them outside. There's no way she would poo outside either!
