How's the xmas tree doing?

I KNEW it was going to be a challenge... but in 24 hours Obie and Ophie (now 6.5 months old and Obie is going to be a BIG Maine Coon, have...

Knocked every single bauble off
Pushed the tree over
Chewed through the lights, killing them!

Just as well I love them!

Ours had been down 4 times (6mo kittens)
I have made a fab discovery though ... Poundland are selling packs of jingle bell tree decorations. Those on the lower branches distract the cats from trying to climb the tree and once they've knocked a bell off they're off chasing it for hours and leave the tree alone!

Sadly we have a Christmas tree with every single branch "dislodgeable", which our 1 year old cats have been very excited to discover! So mornings are spent fixing the branches back on (usually 5 - 10 scattered around). Baubles are generally found throughout the house, and one set of lights has been chewed through! Does that answer your question?! (Loved dearly here too, luckily!)

Surely there is a market for sturdy hooks to screw into the ceiling to hang xmas trees from, thus rendering a tree unknockdownable even if a couple of cats might hang off it from time to time?

Mine is too old to care now, if it's not warm and soft and preferably a human lap she's not particularly interested. It's the present wrapping that she feels the need to be involved in in some way.

Mine isn't too bad, a bit wonky, the star on top is at a quirky angle, the bead chain is hanging off one side and there are baubles under all the furniture. It is amazingly still standing though!

Maybe a wall mounted Xmas tree in future years? (Although pessimists might say that this would provide just as strong a base for climbing.)

Apart from 1 bauble that fat cat likes to paw at, my 2 haven't been bothered.

When fat cat finally managed to knock the bauble off, I put it back a bit higher up, he sat and cried till I moved it back to where it was Grin then went back to pawing it!

It's his new "toy" and he loves it Smile

Two years ago I tied my tree to the ceiling and walls, in three places, using string and cup hooks. It worked amazingly until 27th December, when I heard a loud noise in the middle of the night, came down and found the top part of the tree swinging from the ceiling, with a cat clinging on for dear life.

The trees in the playpen this year, doesn't stop the cats climbing it but it keeps all the baubles in one place.

I bought a slightly smaller one and put it on a small table. It's hard for them to get purchase, although they keep trying. So it's survived so far.

My cats must be unusual as neither have been fussed with the tree at all - perhaps my baubles and branches are just not fun enough Sad Shouldn't complain though as does mean I come down to what I went to bed from!

Ours has a healthy respect for the tree because mil tried to kill him with it

I love Obie & ophies innocent expressions "we're just sitting by the tree, no ulterior motive whatsoever" & kircaldys cats are obviously as shocked as everyone else that the tree fell over spontaneously like that.

Our cat was lovely with the tree. The only thing he enjoyed doing was drinking the water reservoir, but the baubles and lights didn't bother him.
Boxes and wrapping paper however...Smile
This will be our second Christmas without him, and he's very missed.

Reading this thread makes me so happy we decided not to have one this year. Loving the photos of the cats' innocent and slightly shocked expressions as they sit amongst the mayhem they caused! Grin

Mine has killed one bauble to death and chewed most of the lower branches.
She enjoys tinsel.

When my 2 were kittens I came him from work to find the tree by the front door waiting for me. It had been dragged through the lounge and passageway.

Shadows we do lower-branch bells too! Although they still climb up to get at the higher ones and then look the other way when I come in the room Hmm Grin

Mostly they like to sit under it and watch the lights :)

Mine did that the first year or two but then got fed up with it. I also think switching to a real tree helped. I don't know if it's because he didn't like the smell or what, but he gave up after I started getting one.

Medusa your kitty is a stunner!

Looking at your photo again Medusa, I recognise that, "Hmm, I wonder what interesting things will happen if I prod/poke/nudge this thing?" expression.

Ophie's super tufty ears are a joy. Smile

Little miss has pulled it over twice she seems to have lost interest in it, she has now moved on to my Christmas present under the tree I caught her gnawing on the ribbon a few times.

taking a daily battering - 3 baubles smashed - also I have stuffed and feathered birds on there ...of I did

(stuffed as in made of material not dead ones!)

I no longer have a skirt around it as it was a magnet for hiding and fighting each other

I find at least one kitten if not both up there once or twice a day

tree it's self is robust and still green but they like to bite chunks off it and chase them round the house Grin
