The litter tray

Advice please - cat behaving oddly

I would be grateful for any advice please - as our 20 month old neurtered ginger tom cat is behaving a bit oddly.

I think he was under our bed tonight so when we got into bed he emerged, which is usual, although not unheard of.

He is normally shut in kitchen at night with access to cat flap litter trays, food and water in utility area etc.

Tonight when I carried him down to the kitchen he made a rather pathetic yowley sound although he does not appear to be in pain.

I put out some Dreamies, which he ignored.

SO i took him into living room so I can observe him.

He is sat on the sofa in a really weird way with his legs tucked under him. He normally curls up in a ball.

Just wondering if any of this is ringing any bells with any one, please?

He seems to be fine, not in pain, closing eyes and just sitting on sofa.

Thanks so much.

Can you check him over carefully for cuts or other injuries?

Sometimes they will lick a wound a lot, which helps locate it.

He's making a noise like air escaping from a a whoopi cushion REALLY SLOWLY when I try and touch him. He's kind of lying on his side which is not something he normally does.

The thing is it's the middle of the night and the out of hours vet is a long way away so I am not sure whether I need to take him now, leave it to morning or wait and see!

Give the out of hours vet a ring and ask their advice. Cats are good at concealing pain.

Thanks trackrBird I will.

I don't know what to advise as our cat had the odd time we really thought something drastic was happening, laid on side, laboured breathing, we prepared for something awful but the cat then recovered and was fine for over a decade. I just can't tell from what you describe, have you talked with the out of hours vet? I would get advice over the phone if there is someone available and take it from there.

Hope you are ok it's very alarming when a loved pet is ill, you don't want to do the wrong thing, that's why I would seek advice.

Crossed posts with trackrBird- I have always found vets so helpful on the phone and will know what are alarming signs, just ring them now. If they say wait til morning, make the cat comfy, perhaps sleep downstairs so you are near or take them in with you?

I don't recognise that sound you describe at all, OP.

How are his eyes? His expression?

Does he respond to strokes? Does he like your affection?

Does he respond if you wave a ribbon around by him, or the playful things he usually responds to?

Ie I he a bit off colour..or totally unresponsive?

One of my cats had similar symptoms a few weeks ago. He made a low groaning noise when I touched him and if he had to move he did it slowly, lowering himself from the sofa rather than jumping off. He seemed to give off a smell of rotten veg if I tried to pick him up.
I planned to take him to the vets the following morning, but when I got up he seemed much perkier. I've no idea what caused it but he was back to full health in a day or two.
Hope your cat is ok!

Our cat was objecting to being touched and reluctant to move yesterday afternoon. Groaning and limping. Had mud clumps on his fur.

Turned out he'd had a big fight with the local tabby. He is ok today, thankfully.

Thanks, guys, I just called out of hours vet and he made the growling noise down the phone and vet said best to bring him him. Thank goodness for insurance. Off to make myself a coffee as it is a 40 minute drive!

Thanks for the advice, will update when I know what it is. Vet thinks abdominal and so do I because when I touched his tummy he seemed unhappy due to the noise. It could all be fine but better to check it out as I love him! Sad

Hopefully it will just be something simple and he'll be on the road to recovery very soon.

Ahh, poor ItalianCat Sad Only just seen your post over in Chat. I know how worried you must be; our cat was really poorly recently too and it was awful. He's fine now though and I hope your cat will be too.

How is he? Hopefully it was nothing and he's back to normal now.

Not sure about your insurance, but mine has a phoneline you can call that's staffed by vet nurses, so I can call and see if it seems like something that can wait or not. Obviously no help now!
