My wonderful cat was killed this morning

He was the softest, gentlest, silliest cat we've ever had.
He was hit by a car outside our house and died immediately. Luckily a friend was driving past later and saw him and phoned to let me know. I moved him before the dc saw him (he's now at the vets to be cremated). Dh and I are so, so sad.

I haven't told dc yet. Dd in particular is going to be distraught. She had a really special bond with him, he was 'her' cat and they adored each other. If you couldn't find one of them they'd inevitably be with the other. I just don't know how I am going to tell her and Ds Sad Sad Sad

(Name changed for this as am outing myself)

Thanks. Dh gone to get the dc from school Sad

He really was a fantastic cat, brilliant with the dc, actually sought them out for cuddles. Always in the middle of everything. Can't believe his little life was snuffed out in one second.

So sorry. The same happened to my little cat, killed by a parent driving too fast on the school run.

So sorry to hear this JaneZane. We had our new rescue cat run over last October and were totally devastated too

So very sorry to hear this. :(
I got my Mum a kitten when I left home finally (she preferred the kitten) but he stayed with me overnight after I picked him up from his previous home, and we bonded amazingly. Every time I would go back to visit my parents, this kitten/cat would come bounding to see me and want me to pick him up and hang him over my shoulder. He was amazing, he was going to be huge...
and then he got killed by a van when he was just 1yo.

I was devastated and haven't ever been able to get another one - I feel so so much for your pain. :(

Told the dc, really weird reactions as they thought we were joking, they just wouldn't believe us, think it was just too much of a shock, DS was actually laughing saying 'they're joking, they're joking'. Then dd realised and absolutely screamed, screamed and cried. Was awful Sad. DS still didn't get it and dh ended up yelling at him and sending him out of the room as he was still laughing. Dh went out and spoke to him and he finally understood and then he was obviously very upset too. Both very quiet now and watching television.

He bought us so much joy but this part of owning a cat is just awful.

It is awful. The only thing that helped me was to go straightaway to the local RSPCA and give another unwanted rescue cat a home. He hasn't taken the place of the other DCat but it really helped knowing we'd saved another cat from another day or night in an institution.

Oh he is the absolute spitting image of my old ginger tabby boy. I am so so sorry for you all Thanks I hope the DCs can gain a little comfort from sharing memories of him. Be gentle with yourselves, losing a pet suddenly is awful.

You all have my sympathy, we lost our ginger cat last year. For months I kept having little moments where I would forget he was gone and look for him.

:( I'm really sorry Jane... I've lost far too many cats on the road outside our house and it is just so awful... My sons have always been comforted by the rainbow bridge story when we've been in this situation.

Sorry to read this sad news. We found our much-loved and very cute fluffy girl dead in our garden this evening. Only 4, very lively, no signs of injury so I think she maybe had a heart attack, despite her young age. I hope our Mrs Moggins and your ginger boy are playing together at Rainbow Bridge this evening.

sweetestthing so sorry to hear about your lovely girl Sad I know what you will be going through and it is awful. I'm sure she and my boy will be up there - most likely sleeping in ridiculous poses.

Thanks for the kind words everyone. He was hilarious, a real character. I once watched a friend's toddler pick him up from his back end and sort of dangle him trying to give him a cuddle (I did intervene) and he just hung there in a resigned way until I got there, he would never have hurt anyone, he was such a softie.

Terrible evening with dc who were very, very upset and couldn't get to sleep. They ended up sleeping in ds's bed together as they didn't want to be on their own. Weird to see how one ball of ginger fluff could cause such a storm in a family. Dh and I have been awake since 4.30 this morning Sad

Does anyone know how long it will take for us to get his ashes back from the vets? DS is very upset because he didn't say goodbye and it would be nice to say a few words and scatter his ashes, maybe plant a little shrub or something.
