Seizures in cats

On Saturday morning one of our cats (a nine year old male) ran down the stairs looking a bit 'out of it' and ran down the hall looking like he was struggling to stay on his feet. I followed him out into the garden where he was having a full blown seizure.

Within a couple of minutes he came round looking very confused and we rushed him to the vet.

The vet checked him over and couldn't find anything wrong. She took blood and we got the results today - nothing wrong that they could find apart from raised muscle enzymes which is normal following a seizure. All his organs appear to be functioning normally.

We're currently in a watch and wait situation. Obviously we're not with him 24/7 so we don't know if he's had more seizures. He seemed a bit unsettled yesterday afternoon and was pacing for a little while but I've no idea if that was seizure related.

The vet thinks either he was poisoned mildly or he may have a brain lesion growing.

He has become more affectionate and less standoffish over the last few months.

Any experience of seizures starting in an older cat?

Did they run a toxoplasmosis titre? This is the single biggest cause of seizures in cats?

Oh yes meant to say he is only middle aged we don't class cats as older now until they are at least 13.

I'm not sure, I will ring and ask tomorrow. Would that show any symptoms other than the seizure?

My late tom started having seizures at 16 and started a low dose of epilepsy meds shortly after. He had a great life until his death from heart disease at 19.

Most common symptom is seizures.

My cat started to have them when she was 18 (she lived to 20). They seemed to be triggered by certain noises. The first one was when a mop fell on the floor near her, then things like doors slamming, crisp bags rustling, even the sound of her cat litter rattling in the tray would set them off. The vet said it was down to her kidneys and put her on a renal diet.
