my cat is sick :-(

He's been off his food for a couple of days, had a few hairballs. Today we came back to an almighty mess of sick, undigested food, bile and a very sad cat (we popped out for only two and a half hours)

Have emergency vets at half three. I moan about my cat, but we had just got him settled at night, in the house, happy with our new home and his new surroundings and I don't want him to be ill :-(

Mumcentreplus Mon 08-Apr-13 17:24:38

aww...<<hugs>> smokin it's never nice when your cat is sick...cats can be grumpy pants but you still love and worry about them..

How did it go?

smokinaces Mon 08-Apr-13 17:33:29

He's been admitted :-( his kidneys are hard. They're doing blood tests and putting him on a drip. I asked what it usually means (he's nearly seven) and she said most commonly antifreeze style poisoning :-(

He had a massive reaction to his boosters a wee while ago, rushed in for injections of anti inflammatory etc so I can't help but think maybe its caused more damage than we thought. Or he had an underlying illness. Or hes in fact been poisoned :-(

Got to wait till tomorrow to hear more. Was horrible coming home without him.

You said you'd just moved into a new house. Did anyone give you new plants or flowers as a housewarming gift, perchance?

Wheresmycaffeinedrip Mon 08-Apr-13 19:49:53

Oh cozi good thinking. Lilys are toxic to cats aren't they?

smokinaces Mon 08-Apr-13 20:29:12

No cozie. We moved in December, so not really really recent, but I seem to remember posting on here about him being unsettled hence why I mentioned it. I make sure the toilet lid is down, no bleach left in sink etc. Only think I can think of is flash in a bucket with a mop a couple of weeks ago, but same stuff I've always used since I got him three years ago. And bucket is hidden in cupboard now. No flowers or plants in garden or house, though we obviously have new area and neighbours. Neighbours directly nearby seem nice, but I do remember meeting the neighbourhood weirdo over the back in the highrise who was adament cats got on his balcony so he was going to get them. I can't imagine mine going that far though, he's been really nervous since we moved and constantly mewing at the door when he is out, apart from once or twice.

He had a big reaction to his jabs - didn't eat or drink for 24 hours, had to be rushed back with temperature and have injection, then took another few days to be ok.

Just worrying about the hard kidneys, trying desperately not to Google.

Only flowers I've been bought were at valentines from my kids, cheap posies from morrisons, and were put out of reach and I know cat didn't climb there.

Only other thing I am thinking is chocolate. Kids have had eggs etc - very good at eating at table and I was breaking them so they didn't shatter and go everywhere, but maybe some got dropped and i didnt realise or something. Chocolate is poisonous to dogs so guessing it is for cats too?

cozietoesie Mon 08-Apr-13 20:36:26

At least it's nothing plant-like in the house then. (I don't know about chocolate - although I've never known one of my own cats to be interested in it.)

Fingers crossed for his recovery, smokin. That will be your main thought now.

catsdogsandbabies Mon 08-Apr-13 20:38:14

Some debate as to if chocolate is toxic in cats but causes totally different signs so it won't be that. Good luck with everything.

smokinaces Mon 08-Apr-13 20:45:09

I did wonder that catsanddogs as I had my two dss with me who are clearly Easter egg age and vet didnt mention it. She said she couldn't give me diagnosis as she didn't know, was going to dp exploratory stuff and blood tests and put him on a drip. she said the hard kidneys were her concern. I asked what they usually meant. She said usually its antifreeze poisioning, which is very serious, and that many cats die from it. She said to ring in morning not afternoon and took a second number for vets to ring me. I have no idea what to expect, this is my first proper pet if you like.

Feel very guilty. And sad. My mum made me tea and boyfriend sent me a couple of nice texts.

Can't help thinking about worse case scenario. What if he needs to be put down. What do I do. Do i go to vets to be with him. Do I take kids. If not, where do I put them?! Ds1 was v. Upset at leaving him, he has aspergers and struggles with emotions.

Must be positive.

cozietoesie Mon 08-Apr-13 20:55:56

Oh Lordy - if it's something like antifreeze, it's not your fault.

As to tomorrow- let's wait and see. Keep the DCs as cheerful as you can.

Wheresmycaffeinedrip Mon 08-Apr-13 21:03:57

It's not your fault smokin you Couldbt have foreseen the reaction or that he might during antifreeze or whatever it is.

One thing at a time, he's at the vets they will take care of him and do their very best. Right now you are best off getting a bath and getting some rest and sending your little cat all the positive thoughts you can.

I'm so very sorry he's so sick sad x

Vet has just rung, and nothing has got his kidneys working and he's in kidney failure :-( she's asked me to ring back at ten thirty to arrange a time to go see him and have him put to sleep. I need to arrange the kids and stuff. I am so upset, am hiding in my room. She said there is no test but she is convinced its antifreeze poisoning. So now I feel terrible for encouraging him to go out at the new house, for moaning at him and stuff. I dont know what to do with the kids, my six year old is going to be gutted and with his aspergers I don't know how he will deal with it. And I know he will blame me - when the cat wouldn't settle and miowed all the time I said we may have to find another home for him, and he took that as me hating the cat and stuff.

Sparklingbrook Tue 09-Apr-13 09:11:29

Oh smokin I am so, so sorry. ((hugs))

Wheresmycaffeinedrip Tue 09-Apr-13 09:12:30

Oh smokin sad sooo sorry , your poor cat.

spanky2 Tue 09-Apr-13 09:18:17

My df son has aspergers . When his great grandad died they told him he was very ill and died and went to heaven . He was okay as they had told him and he accepted it. I am so sorry . Explain over the next few days that the cat is very ill. It is not your fault .

spanky2 Tue 09-Apr-13 09:21:00

Sorry forgot that it is happening now. It tastes sweet to cats . my cat has hyperthyroidism and is very ill so I understand how you feel . It's the pits.thanks

cozietoesie Tue 09-Apr-13 09:21:51

So very sorry, smokin. You'll find the strength to deal with it.

Remember to get the vet to report it or report it yourself. I don't know where in the country you live but there have been a spate of poisonings in some areas. (Other posters may have info on where you can leave the info.)

smokinaces Tue 09-Apr-13 09:47:11

Thank you. Ds1 is devastated, has asked for a cuddly cat and his bed. Ds2 is five and not all that affected. My mum is coming to sit with the kids, and boyfriend said he will take me so I don't have to go on my own. Wasn't expecting to be so upset.

Am going to do a leaflet thing and put through neighbours doors.
