The litter tray

Moving home

In a couple of weeks we are moving house with our lovely 7 year old cat. Unfortunately he's quite a nervous cat and REALLY hates travelling in cars (I'm talking serious mess, sometimes sickness, constant wailing etc - he gets really distressed)
He's never been in a car for more than 40mins (and that was horrendous) and this move is unfortunately a 2 hour drive :(
Can anyone suggest anything to help ease his stress? We have tried Feliway in the past but it did nothing for him. Any advice would be really appreciated as i'm absolutely dreading the thought of upsetting him :(

Have you considered asking your vet for a sedative?

I would definitely talk to your vet about sedation. I took my friend's cat to Germany and he was pretty much dozing the whole way and seemed pretty happy.

Thanks for your replies, I'll give the vet a call and explain how bad it is. I thought sedation wasn't really recommended for cats though so fingers crossed the vet will be able to help out :)

So date is set for our move, it's next week. Just spoke to my vet regarding the 2 hours journey and he won't prescribe a sedative because of blood pressure problems that they can cause (my cat is a perfectly healthy, 7 year old and vet has seen the state my poor cat gets into after a 10min car journey to see him!!!!)
His only suggestion is to not feed him before the journey (which is what we always do anyway) But that will only reduce the possibility of him being sick and having diarrhea, it won't reduce his stress levels :-(
I don't know what to do now :( I'm absolutley dreading the move.

buggerlugs82- I tried to sit him on my knee years ago but he sprayed everywhere as well as sickness, panting and diarhhea! You can imagine how horrendous that was :( Plus we will have 3 kids in the car this time so I don't think they'll be much room to do that unfortunately

Anyone got any other ideas?
