The litter tray

How do you deal with your litter tray?

Vajazzler · 17/06/2011 22:27

I have 2 new kittens and am wondering how I should deal with my litter tray?!?
A few questions -
Do you completely empty it every day?
Do you scoop out poo?
What do you do with the contents when you empty it?< It feels so wasteful to use a bag
every time!>
I am suddenly freaking out a bit about the fact that they are treading wee/poo germs with every step. Can you help me????

I scoop twice a day and clean litter in every third day.

Use nappy sacks for the poo.

Scoop poo out straight away (i flush it down the loo) and change litter every 3 days.

I work all day, so I can't de poop immediately. I've had to regress to litter trays since we got a dog as we have three cats and all but the kitten were outdoor "pooers"..... since then I make sure I clean out the poo daily but only do a complete change of litter every 3rd day like 5inthebed. I used to do it every evening but my vet advised me to do it less often because it could confuse the cats - she suggested I left a hint of eau de cat's piss in the tray :)

Ok so i dont need to completely change it every day? Great! Ive gone through a 5litre bag of litter in 5 days and thought it was getting a bit expensive!
Thanks for your wisdom!

where do you put the cat litter though, when you dispose of it?

If you get the cat litter crystals, not only is there no smell, but you only need to change the tray every 3 to 4 weeks. It says 4 weeks on the bag but sometimes, with having 3 cats, i change it less than that. You just see how it goes, but there is never a smell, like there is with other litters. You just scoop out the poo and put it down loo or put in general waste in a nappy bag. It really is fab stuff. You can buy from pets at home, tesco, or b and m bargains. Its 3 to 4 quid a bag.

SparklyCloud is that the stuff that looks like jelly crystals? If it's that good I'll get some!

I keep bread wrappers, plastic covers that come on magazines etc for disposing of the litter. We use those clumping microgranules. Not tried the crystals - must look into them.

Buy this It is really fantastic. You scoop the clumps and flush them down the toilet and you only have to change the whole tray every 4-6 weeks when you can actually put it in the compost once you have de-pooed it. It works out really economical - I bought the huge bag after buying the 10 litre bag at Pets at Home. There is no smell unless you are like me and keep forgetting to scoop as you can't smell it if forget to scoop when they have done a loose poo.

Don't confuse it with World's Best Cats Litter which PAH also sell as it is rubbish and smells!

It clumps the wee and any wet poo and dries out poo so once you have scooped, it is completely clean. I have 2 cats and only completely change every 6 weeks.

Its this stuff here but you can buy a different brands but same stuff from B&M or Wilko , some have little blue grains in, some are all white but they all do the same job and i have found they all last weeks.

Its made from silica gel.

ben10, i have used that cat's best litter, and it tracks on the carpet. Yes you throw the clumps away but that means you do also have to top up, so use more. The crystal stuff, you only remove the poos. The wee does turn the liter yellow but no smell at all and it is designed to only be changed every 4 weeks. And it does not track at all.

I must try that crystal stuff - I used Catsan and I am paranoid about it smelling, so I remove poo and flush, but change the litter completely every day (that said, I have only got a kitten litter tray).

I used old supermarket carrier bags to remove and throw it straight in the wheelie bin.

Ben10 that stuff is awesome. I can't imagine having a litter tray with anything else in it. We have one inside cat, with the litter tray in bathroom. Scoop every day or 2, flush down the toilet, completely change every 6 weeks. We do not have a problem with cat poo smells. We also feed her exclusively on James Wellbeloved, which I thought was over-priced nonsense, until I realised that it made cat poo that didn't smell.

I have a litter mat outside the tray and have no litter outside the mat.

GetOrf - Catsan is the devil's spawn of cat litter. It forms concrete on the bottom of the tray and doesn't do anything for the smell.

Go on try Cat's Best.......go on go on go on go on go on go on go on go on Grin

I am def going to try that crystal stuff. What is the texture and size of grain like?

Report
SparklyCloud · 28/06/2011 19:53

grain size is probably like the clay litters, not tiny but not big like the wood pellets. I currently have 2 trays in my bedroom, they were changed 2 weeks ago, have been weed in, yet my bedroom does not smell of anything...with other litters I needed to change every 2 days!

Oh and one of my cats has funny paws, would not even go in the tray with certain other litter if he does not like the feel of it - with the crystal one he took to it immediately.

Unfortunately its definitely my job!
Well i have just put the first lot of crystals in and they are investigating it a lot. Think one of them had a wee.
I also got some of the litter tray liners as i'm sick of wiping poo off the side of the tray.
Will report back our progress....
