After reading lots of lovely advice about my horny tom-cat, I took him to the vets to be neutered - turns out he's already been done. So no idea why he likes to hump inanimate objects either than he just does.

It's most likely a dominance thing. I run a cat rescue and I have had male cats doing the same thing, including one who was very attached to a fluffy toy that he repeatedly humped..... :)
