The litter tray

I'm just about to go and say goodbye to my wonderful cat :(

Just found out he's got advanced kidney disease - I'm so sad :(

He's too ill for treatment and I just want him to be comfortable.

He's a rescue cat and was very badly treated - he grew from being a frightened cat into the most affectionate family cat - I'm so sad - its ridiculous - he's only an animal but he was such a part of our family :(

Oh I'm sorry. It's not ridiculous to be sad.

Well done for giving him a happy life.

I'm very sorry for your loss Dr. My pets are like family to me and I am devastated when I lose any of them.

I'm back now - they were lovely at the vets - we've brought him back with us and will bury him in the garden tomorrow.

DC think he's asleep and will die overnight - they've said goodnight to him - didn't really know what to tell them - he's the first one to die.

I feel we definitely did the right thing as he was so poorly when we saw him at the vets - I don't think he'd have lasted the weekend.

One of mine died of kidney disease. I had him put to sleep when there was no more treatment and frankly I'd left it too long and he was a shadow of his former proud self :(

You did the right thing. I'm very sorry for your loss.

thank you - its very well received - I just can't stop blubbing.

his brother doesn't seem to have noticed that he's gone yet - They were very close - slept cuddled up together and played together all the time - do cats go into mourning like elephants?

:( I've already said it once, but I'll say it again, I'm so sorry you're going through this. Big hugs to you and your DCs (and your other little furry baby).

Am so sorry. It is truly awful to have to go through this.

As others have said, you did a lovely thing in rescuing him and loving him so much. And you gave him the final act of kindness in letting him go with dignity. I'm sure he couldn't have wanted for a lovelier owner.

Big hugs Sad

have just tucked him into his box for tomorrows final goodbye - dc's have made him cards to be buried with him and we're going to buy some snowdrop bulbs to plant over him so we can be reminded of him. Off to bed now as exhausted.

You poor darling. I would be in pieces too. Everyone is right, you have done the right thing and I hope that soon you can remember the good times more than this very sad time.
You were very lucky to have him, and he was equally lucy to have had you.

I'm sorry for your lose Dr. I can understand how upset you are and I cried for over 24 hours when I was told my cat might be ill. It is not unreasonable to be upset, it just shows how much you loved him. He was obviously more than just a pet and was one of the children.

we said goodbye to our eldest cat a few months ago Sad

Aw - thank you every for your kind thoughts.
He was like one of the children really - when we got him and his brother they had been so badly abused that they couldn't deal with any human contact - over about 4 years of gentle coaching they really came out of their shell - the one who died was the most affectionate out of the pair of them.

DC's woke up this morning and asked if he'd died and we said yes - he's stopped breathing in the night - they seem able to deal with that.

DH is going to dig a hole and we'll bury him later this morning.

Ahh DrS

Know how it feels. My little grey persian had the same disease. It was heartbreaking when she passed away. I was shocked at how upset I was.

He was lucky in the end to have a good family who loved him very much.

Thiking of you and your family this morning.

I'm very sorry, it's awful thing to go through.

I lost my old boy the same way on Monday, he'd had kidney disease for two years. It was time for him but that doesn't make it easier.

Glad your DC's are OK

Claire - sorry for you to have to go through it so recently too - we didn't even know there was anything wrong with him which makes me feel awful - I just thought he was a bit off colour for the last week and then suddenly he went downhill overnight.

For such little animals they really are part of the family aren't they.

His brother is starting to act very strange - keeps just sitting and staring at the door as if he's waiting for his brother to come in - he hasn't eaten anything either. When we brought him home from the vets his brother didn't even seem to notice it was him - is that normal do you think?

Cats I think are very resilient and live in the moment more than we do. I think any upset will be hopefully for a few days only.

I didn't bring Harry home as we arranged a cremation but when we lost another cat on the road Harry did go smell her body and was OK and accepting. The one that didn't seemed to search for her and was stressed.

I have two other cats and one was initially a bit stressed but seems fine now, one has been fine. They are both OK now, they weren't siblings but were a tight knit group with my old boy very much the boss, so there will be a period of readjustment here.

If you are worried maybe try a feliway diffuser or a few drops of Bach rescue remedy in their water bowl.

How old are they?

Have just read your message and wanted to say how sorry I am, my thoughts are with you and your family
I lost one of my cats in September and it was the most heartbreaking thing I have ever experienced.
My other cat seemed a bit lost for a few days but I think he's getting better now.
We had our cat cremated but havent yet explained it fully to my DD who was 6 at the time as she's quite sensitive, She understands that she's not here but still misses her loads and gets quite upset.
She has made a little book with a picture of the cat on the front and we have had to write our favourite memory of her in it, my DD keeps this book with all her books in her room

Sorry to here about your beloved cat, he's had a good life with you though and you're doing the right thing for him now. Last week I had to have my hamster Max put to sleep, he had a tumour, and I was so upset. No matter how big or small these pets are they are a big part of our lives x
