Family dog getting PTS on Thursday

Beautiful yellow lab who turned 13 yesterday has been struggling for a while but over the last few days has gotten so much worse. She can hardly walk, panting all the time and has stopped eating.

She's had a great life! Been the absolute life and soul of the house and I missed her when I moved in with my now dh.

My dad phoned the vet earlier and they initially said they were fully booked for the week, but have managed to get her in for the injection on Thursday at 5pm. I don't know how I will cope at work that day.

I'm going to drive over tomorrow to say my goodbyes and my mum and dad will be with her for her final moments.

I'm utterly heartbroken, she is honestly the best dog ever - so friendly, never lost the puppy mentality and was always wagging her tail! I think she loves DH more than me as it's always him she greeted when we visit.

I'm gutted she won't be around and I'm trying to take comfort that she's honestly had a great life and lots of pictures and happy memories.

I just wanted to let this all out along with the tears that are stinging my eyes.

Attached a picture of my beautiful wee Bonnie (booboo) ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

Thank you for the last 13 years, sleep easy and enjoy all the unlimited treats over rainbow bridge 🥺

She is beautiful ❤️ it's always so hard to say goodbye to such loyal friends, but it sounds like it's her time to go. Remember all the happy times op and sending you strength for Thursday

@dillydallydollydaydream7 thank you ❤️ I've just got to remember all the good times we've shared! Will be a hard day and will be hard visiting my parents without her barging out the door for cuddles

That's exactly what you have to remember ❤️ I remember reading before a quote that said they're only there for a part of your life but to them you are their whole life and it's so, so true. I still remember our family dog from growing up and she went at 14 and that was so hard. We have a springer now and he's 8 and still thinks he's a puppy, wish they would live forever. Have the best cuddles with her tomorrow ❤️

I’m sorry. She’s beautiful and it’s a really tough time. Tell her you love her, cuddle her, give her all her favourite treats.

I lost two gorgeous labs over the last few years. I kept a tiny bit of their fur and had it put into a key ring that goes in all our days out, like they used to, and a pendant. We also planted a Xmas tree over each dog where they’re buried at the end of the garden. I still go and talk to them regularly.

Huge hugs to you. Treasure how lucky you are to have had her.

I'm so sorry. We had a beloved dog put to sleep age 5 because of cancer and that broke me. Our current old boy is almost 13 and slowing down so much. All I know is you know when it's times and they reply on us to do our best for them. Try to remember good times which you will in months to come, I am sorry

I'm so sorry. I've been through this so many times now and it never gets any easier. It is the last huge gift you can give them though - a peaceful last few moments in return for a lifetime of love.

I have a lab now. He is my first lab and there is something different about the love they give. You will be in my thoughts.

I saw her last night and got lots of cuddles, but it is her time to go. She's now not eating and being sick, she even struggles with relieving herself, so we know it's the right thing, but my god it hurts doesn't it?

Yes it hurts. For me at least as much as any other grief

I’m so sorry. Your heart must be breaking. I have a v elderly labrador too whose health is starting to deteriorate. We aren’t at the decision phase yet, but I am dreading it when the time comes.

I trot this Lorca poem out a lot because Nurse Phyllis said it on Call the Midwife once when I was broken 🐾 🐾

It's True
Ay, the pain it costs me
to love you as I love you!

For love of you, the air, it hurts,
and my heart,
and my hat, they hurt me.

Who would buy it from me,
this ribbon I am holding,
and this sadness of cotton,
white, for making hankerchiefs with?

Ay, the pain it costs me
to love you as I love you!

She also said this ‘and, if I may, the pain it costs to love? I believe it is always worth it’

And it is. May your goodbye give you your peace and her your blessing to join those who have gone before her. X 🐾 🐾

Very sorry OP, we can never keep them long enough.

It’s absolutely horrible, but you have to consider the flip side is the years and years of happiness that you’ve had. And it’s the only thing to do.☹️

I’m sorry OP 😢

It wasn’t my intention to upset you - just a reminder that some things in life are always worth the hurt when the time comes.

I’d rather know the misery of losing mine than never having had their love at all.

Are you just assuming it's old age or are you sure she's not got a condition that can get sorted out?

Don't want to believe she has to get PTS Sad
