The doghouse

Dog names you never hear these days.

I took Bella out this morning and got to thinking that dog names seem to have trends much like baby names do. So after seeing Poppy, Alfie, Colin, Archie and another Bella I tried to remember the dog's names from my childhood and can't remember hearing them for years.
So does anybody know a Shep, Beauty, Benjy or Blackie now? What other names do you remember from years ago?

Well, the obvious one that comes to mind is a racial slur, which was used depressingly often for dogs. See the Dambusters' dog gravestone controversy this year.

Fido and Patch yes I remember them and Rover. My Dad's dog, a pointer, was Shiloh which was as uncommon then as it is no doubt now and my Gran's dog, a corgi, was Ginny.

Ben. When I was a kid various male dogs round here were called Ben. I never knew a single dog called Rover or Fido. I did once meet a Spot, but the owner was a non-English speaker and the dog was brindled.

I do know a dog called Mac, though.

Currently popular names are Buddy and Dolly. I've also come across several called Rose/Rosie and another couple called Merlot.

I met a lovely dog called Rex today which I thought was a nice old type name.

Trixie, Shandy and Brandy were favourites where I grew up in the 70’s. My grandparents called every dog they owned Lucky. Confused

Ahhh I had a Shandy when I was little (in the sixties). My gran had a dog shaped pyjama case called Michelle which I always found very odd 😂😂😂

We rehomed a husky with typical husky markings but he has a large black patch on his tongue and my husband wanted to call him Spot!
