Motion sickness tablets

My vet has just quoted me £62 for 4 tablets for motion sickness! Is that insanely expensive? I wanted to take ddog out in the car to the coast or even on a holiday but he gets sick in the car and doesn’t look very happy about being there.

I don’t have to buy them I know, and the alternative is not taking him but is there anything else that’s not £62 that’s any good?

I bought those tablets and thought the price was ridiculous (only bought 2 tabs). I gave my young lab pup half a tablet and it seemed to help but not miraculous.

There's a school of thought which reckons that dog car sickness is a learned reaction - ie, ew, there's the car, I have a horrible time in there, I think I'm going to be sick, look, I've been sick - so if you can break that association, then you're halfway to stopping it altogether. And those vet prescribed tablets are the gold standard. So maybe it's worth forking out for a few very expensive puke-free journeys, to stop it in the long run.

OR, another school of thought (eg, the experienced owners of the kennel DDogs go to) reckons Stugeron sea sickness pills do much the same thing. Be careful with the dose and don't tell the pharmacist they're for the dog.

Or you can try ginger biscuits and hope that the dog eventually grows out of it (as mine did, although he was always very drooly. Current dog is a work in progress).

If it is cerenia it is worth every penny! I bet you will not need to take all 4 to stop the travel sickness completely in your dog. It is a magic drug (in my opinion!)

In my experience cerenia is head and shoulders above all other treatments for travel sickness. Stugeron may stop vomiting but the dog is still uncomfortable and still feel ill and you have to give it for each journey for a long time.

Ginger biscuits do nothing and dogs are clever and associate them to the journey so often stop eating them.

Cerenia seems to turn off the whole fear, discomfort and illness the dog feels and is only needed to be used a couple of times.

How do you find out the dosage level for that drug?

Ask your vet which one they wanted him to have
Get a prescription then buy it online

Cerenia is most definitely the single most effective anti-emetic for dogs. It blocks not only the ability to be sick, but also nausea. For most dogs it take two decent size journeys with cerenia at least 24 hours apart and the motion sickness is cured.
You can ask your vet for a written prescription for it, but they can charge for this.

Wow Lonecatwothkitten that's sounds amazing. I've done one journey and only gave him half a tablet. I'll try again tomorrow. I'm just unsure of dosage as he was only a pup when it was prescribed.

How about the "old fashioned way"?
The best way to combat motion sickness is by having your dog in a crate, covered with a towel so he can only see out on one side - preferablythe back. Do lots of little journeys and some longer ones. Always ending up at a great place to walk! Over time he will get used to travelling.
I had a dog just like yours (yellow fountain dog) .... she eventually was able to travel on the back seat.

He does travel bless him but he looks totally green the entire way and is often sick. I just thought it is cruel to do it to him for over an hour without tablets but I don’t want to pay £62!!

I agree Menora its impossible to just ignore it. My pup looks like this by the time I get in the car!! And he salivates all the way. I've tried crates, crate covers, a different car, going out every day to great locations. I've tried EVERYTHING but he is so distressed!!

@DogsandBoysmeanMud it is really important that the dose is right. Speak to your vet with your dogs current body weight to find out the correct dose - there are four different tablet sizes.

Menora he's much happier now but still droolly in the car but it's almost like he just expects to drool. He jumps in and out the car so can't be that scared

Lonecatwithkitten he's 22kg no so will give the full dose. Just was a bit worried when o gave the first lot that it would knock him out.

RiaRoth absolutely. Someone told me to do what they do with farm animals and put a bag on his head!!! FFS. Obvs I didn't.

@DogsandBoysmeanMud they will not sedate him as the drug very specifically binds to the chemo receptor trigger zone only blocking nausea and vomiting.
