Puppy dog not cocking a leg

We've had a miniature poodle dog for a couple of weeks now, he's about 15 weeks First dog I've had for many years but has become instantly loved by the whole family. He came more or less house-trained, though we have had one or two accidents.

One thing I don't understand is that he doesn't cock a leg to pee, he squats like a female. Not complaining, just curious - will this change?

Puppies do squat although I not sure when they start lifting a leg. Puberty probably.

Some Male dogs take ages to learn how to cock their leg and some never do it.

Our dog only cocks his leg when he's marking his territory, squats the rest of the time!

Mine’s 3 now and still a squatter which comes with the added bonus of peeing up his front legs and paws Hmm

Mine didn’t start cocking his leg until about 6 / 7 months , and he only does it when we are out on walks , in the garden he doesn’t bother he just stands and pees .

Mine was about 7 months when he started cocking his leg. Even now, if just in our garden peeing on the lawn and not against anything, he will squat rather than cock Grin

My 8 month old puppy started cocking his leg about a month ago, just when marking territory. Before he always squatted.

It’s normal. He will cock his leg when the hormones kick in.
Don’t neuter him before he cocks his leg, because a) he won’t have reached puberty and b) he’ll squat for life probably.

Mine didn’t until he was about 1.

We had all of ours neutered before this though so it didnt make a difference to them

My mini poodle is 2 now and only really cocks his leg when we are out. He can't be bothered in his own garden.

They don't as puppies. It's funny watching them learning to balance on three legs to do it though when they start.

Our dog was about 9 months, still only really does it when we're out and mostly squats in the garden.

Ours didn't start cocking his leg until he was about 5-6 months of age.

However I do walk a bitch that cocks her leg!

I have an old bulldog, he was 3 or 4 before he cocked his leg, and once he started doing it, he only really did to mark territory, he tends to squat now a lot more, but that is prob as his hips aren't what they were.

Mine first cocked his leg up a lamp post on one of his first walks once he was fully vaccinated - he looked so shocked!
He’s 8 now and only does it on walks, he squats on the lawn at home.

Dogs cock their legs to leave a scent message as high up as possible for other dogs to catch. They might not bother at home where no other dogs will sniff and respond.
Little puppies don’t cock because without hormones their wee is of no interest to others. Also they’d probably fall over.
