Advice on Lip Fold surgery

Hi, I have a 4 year old cocker spaniel who has had several issues with his lip folds, leading to infections and the most recent flare up has been quite nasty. He has needed almost a month of antibiotics and lots of lotions and potions applied, which he finds painful and cries.
I obviously don’t want him to suffer the rest of his life with this and the upset of cleaning him and hurting him. I spoke to a couple of dog walkers whose dogs had the lip fold surgery with huge success and haven’t looked back. My vet has confirmed that he has a very deep fold on one side so she would recommend the surgery.
The problem is I have such a hang up on him being cut there and putting him through it, feeling very stuck between a rock and a hard place.
Has anyone had this surgery on their dog and please can you advise what the success and recovery was. Any other suggestions more than welcome.

No, I've never had a dog go through it, but I did have a dog with a chronic injury that was sorted out with a fairly drastic op. It was 100% worth it. It looks as if the alternative here is continual painful flare-ups and I don't think I would put a dog through that if there was a sensible fix.
