Does anyone else own a runaway dog ?

If so, how do you cope ? Any advice or tips ?

My younger dog is an escapee. She can easily clear the 6ft fences when she wants to but thankfully hasnt for a while. Her party trick is to squeeze out as i open the front door and shes off like a rocket. She did this tonight in fact. Id just bought cold meat so i sat down outside my gate and started feeding older ddog and she zoomed past a couple of times and stopped for a taste and i grabbed her

Forgot to add i have a 10m long line lead that i use if both dogs are out in the front garden so she cant get away yet still has freedom to sniff about

Stair gate in front of front door to stop him running out.

Trellising on top of 6ft fence and plant pots/hedging/shrubs in front of fence to stop him getting a run up.

Are you talking about a dog that escapes from home, or dog that buggers off during walks and doesn't come back when called?

Does the dog escape your house, or run off on walks?

If the former, you really need to be aware of where the dog is at all times. Double door/gate systems in place to stop the dog running out - so baby gate/inner door is shut before the front door is opened. If your garden isn't secure, then the dog can't be left out on it's own - either tether the dog with a metal line so he can't chew it and escape, or make sure someone is out with him at all times.

If it's on walks, then you really need to keep your dog on a lead or longline at all times. Don't give them the chance to run off. Use a secure field and lots of treats to practise recall.

It's so dangerous for dogs to just run off - around here there's a spaniel that disappears on walks/escapes from it's garden and I'm so surprised it's not been injured yet. It's always running about among cars on the road.

Thanks for the replies and the advice. She will just run off if ever she finds herself off her lead. Not too bad at trying to escape the house, but if she does happen to find an open door ....she’s gone.

She is great at recall in the house, but once she’s outside, takes no notice. She has got into fields of livestock twice which was terrifying, I had to get in with her until I could manage to get her out. Then at least the farmer knew I was trying really hard to get her under control. Now I always have her on the lead. I’ll put her outside, but sadly on a long chain. She hasn’t had a good run for weeks now.

I’ve ordered a long line and a clicker, and a doggy friend of mine is going to teach us chase recall techniques.
