How to bring home puppy?

Hi!

We are collecting a cocker spaniel puppy the end of august who will be 8 weeks old and unsure the best way to transport him home?

My girls would love to cuddle him but i am aware that he needs to be restrained so unsure of the best way to do this, harness and belt, cage or carrier?

We had a pet carrier for ours, it would probably be the best options as I’m not sure such a small pup would tolerate a harness if they are not used to it?

We put his crate in the back, obviously padded out with the puppy blanket they gave him.

He sat in my friends lap all the way home. DH had a family emergency last minute so wasn't able to be there.

Soft balaked and towel in the front passenger footwell... one driving and one looking after puppy.

Mine came home on her blanket on top of a towel on my knee whilst partner drove. She was scared (not surprisingly) and I thought human contact better than none. Towel was there in case she was sick or did a wee/poo (not needed). She was too scared to wiggle about

They do need to be restrained somehow - by law if nothing else. If you get in an accident the dog is unrestrained in the car it can invalidate your insurance. I was in an accident last week and my dog was in the back (secured with his seatbelt) and if he hadn't been clipped in, he'd have gone flying and would probably have been badly injured, so please do be careful. I was only going about 5mph and the other car was going at maybe 25mph.

Ours came home on my lap in the backseat, but he was clipped into a seatbelt and harness so he was safe. The other options are travel crates or a set-up with the dog travelling in the boot. Mine was fine on my lap and slept all the way home (about 90 minutes travel).

A crate would be the best way. Safely restrained. Plus there’s a high chance the puppy may throw up or defecate and it’s easier if it’s contained in one place!

We bought our lab pup home in a cat basket. He was fine.

Sat on dh's lap, on a towel, only 40 minutes. She was fine and 8 think the cuddling helped. She’s now 7 months and v v happy in a crate in the car or just sitting quietly on the back seat, so No long term effects.

Thanks everyone... i think he will be sitting on my lap (securely with a seatbelt attachment) i think he will need cuddles after all im taking him from all he's ever know and could probably do with the cuddles!

I had my 8 week old puppy on my knee with blankets etc as my partner drove. She had a quick look around and then snuggled into my lap and went to sleep for the 50 minute drive home. We now have an inseparable bond, not sure if this had an effect but I like to think so :-)

ds had ours in the back seat on his knee. During the 20 minute drive it did a very runny poo, squirmed about in it for a bit, then threw up. ds, pup and car was covered in poo vomit soup.

If we did it again it would be in a small box/basket lined with a couple of puppy pads just incase and a towel/blanket. That way it could be on a knee still or beside them on the seat.
