Greyhound farting

its driving me insane. My house stinks like rotten egg as she farts constantly!
I have tried a couple of different foods, she can't tolerate any sort of wet food as it makes her so much worse and poos go like slop but she also won't eat dry (moistened with water) by itself.
I have tried Gain, chappie wet and dry, harringtons wet, harringtons grain free.
Atm she is on Harringtons (normal) salmon flavour and a tiny sprinkle of Hi life Feed Me semi moist food to get her to eat.
She looks lovely, right weight, lovely shiny coat and happy in herself but she just stinks!!!
Any ideas?

Look at allaboutdogfood.co.uk for an even higher quality food. Some of those you have tried are really low nutirionally.

Experiment with brands and meats (steadily) until you find one that suits and does not create wind.

e.g. Try a high quality duck based food. If that still results in wind, try turkey based. If that doesn't work, try a different brand. Swap slowly and give eat food at least 2 months before swapping again.

could you suggest any at all, I will look at that website too.
Harringtons do a turkey, I just thought salmon was less dodgy on the tums x

The meats were just examples. I'd avoid beef, chicken and lamb for now (just because they are the most common allergens) but otherwise feel free to start with any meat.

Look at Aatu, Akela, Eden, Canagan, Carnilove, Millies Wolfheart, Wolfworthy.

Of those, Millies is probably the best £ value and tends to be consistently loved by anyone who tries it. But they are all excellent.

Raw green tripe by Nutriment. Once she is settled on that you can add in other raw food like turkey or chicken. Nutriment is a complete raw dog food.

My budget isn't huge unfortunately that's why we used mid range harringtons
Tried the butcher's cans also with some dry (tripe mix) and she was horrendous, terriblr diarrhea x

@xxxJess123xxx

ZooPlus website has lower prices if you buy in bulk.

Higher quality or specialized food (sensitive, digestive, gastrointestinal high fibre - keywords to look for) is high value, hence is better digested and creates less waste inc. wind.

Bowl. For tall dogs is better to have a stand so they do not swallow too much air, which has to come out the other end in the form of a fart :) . If your dog eats too quick (hoovers up food within 2 minutes) place round object (sauce dip serving dish upside down for example) in the center. This will stop the dog eating too quickly, hence not swallowing too much air.

Treats that have activated charcoal in them (can be bought by weight in Pets at Home) will reduce the stinkiness level of farts!

Mine (Lurchers) were on Canagan for ages, but we went through a phase where we had to switch them onto something cheaper. I did a lot of reading and asked a lot of questions and in the end we went for Skinners Field and Trial Salmon. It suited them both really well, healthy skin, coats and poos etc. You can buy it on a monthly subscription from Amazon as well, which brings the cost down even further.

Having tried all the different foods and having them upset her stomach, it might be worth giving her a course of probiotics to get everything back on track before doing anything else. I use Canikur, which is what our vets advise, but buy it online, as it’s much cheaper that way. You could potentially do a week of gentle, home cooked food like white fish and rice, plus the probiotics, before very slowly starting to introduce another food.

When my younger lad was very ill towards the end he could not tolerate anything other than white fish or salmon, with rice or quinoa for weeks. (Tesco do a decent size bag of frozen white fish pretty cheaply and you can just microwave a fillet and add it to rice for a quick meal.) Unfortunately we couldn’t get any weight on him like that, despite him being on 6 feeds a day, so were desperate to find a complete food he could tolerate. Tried Millies, etc, took advice from all the high end food brands about food suitable for dogs with his issues but, ultimately, we found the only food he could tolerate was Chappie, but only the original fish type, the other flavours don’t have the same formula.

Having said all that. If her poos are normal and she’s health in herself, it could be that a course of probiotics might be enough to settle things down and reduce her gaseous emissions.

Might be worth asking your vet for a couple of doses of Panacur wormer. One of my dogs was very like yours and I could not keep his gut stable whatever I did. The vet thought he might have picked up giardia and gave me five days of panacur for him (although it is a wormer it also kills giardia).

I was sceptical but she was right. Life transforming! The owner of the kennels I use , who also breeds and trains gun dogs, also put me on to CSJ food for working dogs. He is definitely not a working dog, but the food really agrees with him so have kept him on it long-term.

My boy could strip wallpaper. Absolutely revolting.

He’s on Arden grange large breed now and is much better. Still let’s off the occasional bomb but nothing like he used to.

I believe a spoonful of Greek yoghurt is helpful daily.

I have a whippet who has done nothing but fart all evening, so you have my sympathies OP!

I don't believe for a second that such a beauty could produce smelly farts 😏.

You have my sympathy, I literally gag when the dog farts.

Try CSJ adult. I've got two greyhounds and a lurcher. They all do well on it and approx £15 per 15kg bag. I add a little boiling water and let it soak for a few minutes and then cold water. No pumping in this house.

We've recently transferred to Wagg wheat free as our boy has a sensitive tum. We had always used Harringtons with our last dog but none of the varieties seemed to work with him and a friend recommended Wagg.

Pleasantly surprised as it isn't as expensive as most of the sensitive dry food. Meat isn't the main ingredient so we add some cooked chicken and it's working out well for us.

Our dpuppy has a greyhound dgp and her farts are somewhat toxic also..

@xxxJess123xxx No, it doesn’t matter that it says it’s for working dogs. It actually means it makes it cheaper, as it’s exempt from VAT. Protein levels etc, are fine for sighthounds, in fact it was a well known sighthound trainer that recommended it to me for my boys.

moosemama · 11/07/2020 23:10

I’ve heard good things about CSJ from other people with sighthounds as well.

God, I used to have a greyhound that farted like a human (in terms of the sound) . Disturbing. Used to stretch out and do these super noisy farts while looking back at me and smiling/licking his lips. I'd be in the middle of watching TV or something and it was just jaw-droppingly uncouth.

Sounds like I'm making this up, but I swear this is true. Horrifying. Anyway, hope you find a good solution OP Grin

Will see if I can source a small bag to try first Smile
Those who feed kibble, do u mix anything in or just plain. She won't eat plain kibble and anything I mix in gives her the runs as well as makes farts worse!

Our farting mutt is on Pooch and Mutt 'Health and Digestion' which is salmon based kibble. He used to have really loose poos and awful wind but has had pick up-able poos and very little trumps since he switched. To be fair I think he's a lot less stressed having family around all the time since DH been working from home since lockdown which has also helped.
He's happy with dry kibble but even happier when we mix it with warm water to make a bit of a soupy kibble offering.

Report
moosemama · 12/07/2020 13:37

Have you tried feeding kibble after soaking in warm water from a boiled, cooled kettle? That’s often enough to persuade them, as it makes the kibble smell stronger and therefore more appetising.

My two always ate kibble happily without anything added, but my old boy has a small amount of Chappie Original in his now to hide one of his supplements in.

My greyhound used to be a stinker on Harrington's too. He's now fed Essential Foods and it's very rare he farts now, though the rare time he does it's still deadly and usually down to us giving him a treat off our plates
