Ensure you have a lifetime policy for the maximum amount you can afford - at least 7K per condition per year would be my advice.

Yep, lifetime policy for as uch as you can get.

My dog has a long term condition, he is only only on lifetime 2.5 , it's nowhere near enough and of course we can't reinsure him now with his existing condition.

Lots of people will say put money aside in a separate account and self insure - but I prefer the peace of mind, especially as I have a pup.
I did lots of research - you definitely need to get one that covers lifetime condition - e.g. if he needs long term medication, the insurance covers this every year, not just one year. I went with Petplan in the end - they seem to get good reviews and came out as one of the cheaper ones. I've got the mid tier cover (£7,500 a year limit). It's circa £22 a month. You can buy online and get cashback too (Quidco etc). Cost can vary vastly based on breed of dog....

Get the maximum, lifetime cover you can. If you ever need it, it is a real comfort. Prices rack up very quickly and it is hard to change cover or insurer further down the line because they exclude much of anything you've ever seen the vet for. e.g. treatment for one-off nausea can mean digestive issue are excluded totally if you ever try to switch.

e.g. we are currently £10k into treating a chronic ear infection

Nothing serious enough you'd ever consider PTS but something that has been time consuming and costly to address. We have been so grateful to have the insurance coverage for it.
