Whoever you go with I recommend a life policy for as much cover as you can afford. Look at the T&Cs closely as they differ a lot.

Personally I would avoid any that ask for a percentage as well as an excess. Equally I would steer clear of those that have limits per condition because even a severe episode of D&V set us back £2k and for me I think it's better to be able to claim on anything however many times up to the total amount.

I am with petplan and they have paid out for many accidents, illnesses and investigations. Around £5000 in total so far.

I have seen others recommend different companies. If you search on here for similar threads you should find posts.

Petplan don't hike up premiums after claims so can make the most of it without worry of paying extra for rest of dogs lifetime. There's a 20% vet bills + excess once they hit old age but so many insurers opt to make the premiums unaffordable, so at a time when highly likely to need more long term medications or treatments for things like arthritis etc many people are forced to cancel the policy & they can no longer switch as so much would be uncovered as preexisting. My dogs medications alone are more than the premiums.

Its not like other types of insurance as switching soon becomes difficult as anything dog has seen vet for (whether claimed or not) will often be classed as preexisting & can be grouped so a uti could be all urinary conditions. See it as a long term decision & go for high cover as it doesn't increase on year so if have a youngster in 10+ yrs its not going to go as far. Many people greatly underestimate how much vet fees can be anyway.

There are three types of insurance:

Lifetime: where the policy renews each year and conditions are covered for the lifetime of the pet. This is the best option.

Time limited: where each new condition is only covered for a year and then you can no longer claim for anything related to it.

Maximum benefit: where you get a set amount per condition, e.g £2000, and once that amount is reached then you can no longer claim for anything related to it.

Be careful as well when choosing the policy limit, as one well known company (I won’t say which, in case they have now changed their policies) used to say they covered for £6000 a year, but in the small print it was actually £500 per condition, so your poor pet would need to have had 12 things wrong to actually get the full £6000 out of them.

I second Petplan, my cat is insured with them and was hospitalised with kidney failure a couple of years ago. Petplan paid up in full without problem and although the premiums went up in subsequent years it wasn't by a ridiculous amount.

They aren't the cheapest but they have been good for us.

I would also recommend getting the covered for life option which means that the plan can't be cancelled no matter how many claims you make and also to get the highest amount of annual cover that you can afford. I hit may annual cover limit of £7,000 when my cat was ill.

We are with bought by many. Seems ok so far. We have had quite a few claims as she’s a rehomed older dog. We went with lifetime insurance.
