Hello all

My dog was out running
Seems to have hit under his tummy off a post
These is a long cut
Not deep
Very red

Rang vet w few days ago
This dog is very very anxious and will never let me put him in car

Vet said anti biotic and a lampshade around neck to prevent constant licking

Today I noticed some puss
Will of course ring vet first thing Monday

Is there anything else I should be doing before then?

Dog is very happy as always
Keen to go walkies 2-4 times a day but I just worry he is of course very precious
I want to do as much here then consider what if I need to take in for vet to see him

Thanks all

I'd wash with salt water or diluted hibiscrub if I was worried about infection.

Dogs tend to be pretty robust. One of mine got a cut over a rib under her chest a while ago. It's left a scar but we kept it clean and it didn't need the vet.

Ok thank you
This innocent has been known to jump from the car across a bust road if I attempt to take to vet

Today it stinks
Have antibiotics
Used salt water yesterday and have cone around head to dissuade him from licking it non stop what else should I be doing?

Have you got any sudocrem? I use it on any grazes or cuts for the dogs. Clean the wound thoroughly then sudocrem.

If it stinks, it's infected. Phone vets out of hours and ask for advice. Do you have any hibiscrub or similar? The vet would know if anything you have can be used on your dog.

If it stinks though that’s a very worrying sign. A different course of antibiotics might work but honestly I think I’d be calling your vets today for advice - Do they have any out of hours cover?
If not, you could try a video consultation with a company like Vets Now. I’d be anxious about leaving it until tomorrow.

Yes if it smells that’s a real issue. Can you call an out of hours vet? Would he do better with a mobile vet coming to the house? I really wouldn’t want to leave a wound that smelt.
In case of future wounds (hope not but in case) Leucillin spray is good to have In the medicine cupboard. Rinse out minor injuries with that. Helps clean and prevent nasties!

Are you certain the smell is from this wound?? That is odd. Sad

If the wound is healing then that is good, but the smell isn’t. We always use salt water frequently on any wound, but if he’s had antibiotics for this week, he may need some more. Definitely call the vet and get another opinion- perhaps you could photograph it for them so they can actually see it? X

Can you post a photo?

Report
dublingirl66 · 01/07/2020 14:40

Yes I will try

Would you believe he was doing so well
No bad smell

And he hit it off something earlier just outside the house so there was small amount of blood

Rang vet and they said they need to see him
But he is too anxious

6/7 days ago sorry meant to say
Took that pic
Now it's smaller
Red and barely noticeable

What worried me was the smell at the weekend after 6 days antibiotics

Vet said keep a close eye but would not give more tablets so fair enough

Can you post a photo of what it looks like now? Ideally one just of the wound without all the fur. Have the edges closed? It's tricky to advise on a photo that's a week out of date.

But I'd be concerned about a wound in that location (tension) that is that deep.

Any joy @dublingirl66 ?

I have to say i'm a bit worried. That wound is rather deep, and in an awkward area.

Is the running away unusual? I'd be concerned about pain and infection

Report
Veterinari · 01/07/2020 20:36

Just to add

There's an infection called pseudomonas that has quite a distinctive smell. Sometimes described as fruity or popcorny. It's an anaerobic infection and difficult to treat - the first-line antibiotics usually prescribed won't be effective.

I just want to flag it to you as whilst unlikely, if it is that or a similar infection, then he needs to be seen as a matter of urgency as the wound may need different antibiotics and/or flushing under sedation
