Is Sky a good name for a male dog?

We are hopefully getting a puppy in a few weeks, a little boy light brown in colour. For personal reasons I quite like the name Sky but not sure if everyone will assume he is female. Not that it really matters I suppose. Should I go with it or choose a different name?

He’s a dog. You could call him literally anything. Don’t overthink it.

Sky seems as good a name as any and I would have thought fine for either sex.

The only thing to consider is I have read somewhere that having a two syllable name is deemed to be better. I can't remember why but maybe it distinguishes it from a command which is typically one.

Are you planning to socialise with people with children aged 2-4?
Is anyone in the house named Ryder?

The dog won't give a fig!

Our is referred to as:
Floofy
Woofy
Lady Woofsalot
Sniffy
Sniffaletta
Waffles
Bunny
Lapin (when we're in France Grin)

But her real name is Alice. It was Alba when she was in the shelter.

There is something a bit girlie about it. But if anyone asks, you can just say it's short for Luke Skywalker 😄

I know 4 dogs called Sky/Skye and they are all female. Skye, to me, being Scottish and thinking of the island, sounds feminine. If you're ok with (maybe) having to correct people assuming he's a girl then bash on, it's a nice name for either I would say. He won't care obviously Grin

@Biteyshark working collies tend to have one syllable names as they are easier and quicker to say and can travel a greater distance when called but never names that sound like away or comebye! But interesting all my spaniel and working spaniels I know have two syllable names.

Sky would not work for me as I use the "lie" command a lot but that is with herding sheep (although saying that a champion sheepdog was called Sly!)

Yes, we were told this too.

Something to do with better response to recall?

I would assume that a dog called Sky/Skye is female.

Erm.... it actually will be short for Skywalker. I😊
I know the dog wont know, I'm just not wanting people to start telling me it is a female name.

Why not just call him skywalker?

Our dog is called Sky, great name. She's a girl but it would work for either, especially with a star wars connection.
Poor thing is rarely called Sky though, plenty of nicknames in this jouse!

Skype is a pretty popular (here) human girls name so yes most people would associate it with that. Nobody will see your dog's name written down as Sky.

What about Skyler? Unisex (though female on breaking bad)

I associate Sky with Skye from paw patrol who flies a pink helicopter. So I'd be inclined to lead towards Rocky or Rubble instead.

But since its after Luke Skywalker, why not just call him Luke?!

If the dog is going to be called Skywalker why not just use Wally as the short version .

GinWithRosie · 25/06/2020 23:32

I would definitely think it was a girl 🤷‍♀️ As would any child (or parent of a child) under the age of about 10 😂

PAW Patrol,
PAW Patrol,
We'll be there on the double!

Funny you say that as our farm collie was called fly so 'come by fly' became such a familiar phrase

I would happily call him Luke but that's been vetoed by the rest of the family!

Wasn’t Sky the name of the young male lead in Mama Mia?

I've known a male Skye & tbh i find most people refer to dog with wrong gender as have a kind of default he/she in head for dogs even after they know. Willow is another which tends to be more popular for girls but can be male like the film character.

More importantly does it go with your surname for when it gets called out in the vets waiting room Grin I'm hoping your surnames Walker.

Ellmau · 26/06/2020 16:32

Or Walker for short?

I think Sky's fine, tbh. Even if some people do think he's a girl.

I don't think Walker is a good idea - every time we said his name he would think we were going for a walk Grin

I would think a dog called Sky was female. I think most people would. Not that it matters to be honest. Pick a name that you like. People often think our dog is a girl. Doesn’t bother me.
How about Chewy or Bodhi for an alternative Star Wars themed name?
