Hamster poorly

DDs hamster is poorly, we took him to the vet last week who prescribed him anti inflammatory drops, the course has now finished and he's back to how he was before we took him.

He's eating and drinking, but is breathing quite heavily, and fairly unsteady on his feet. The vet thought he may have had a mini stroke or could be arthritis, as he is nearly 2. The thing is if he's in pain and is unlikely to live longer we would of course get him put down if this was in his best interest.

But if its arthritis, and the anti inflammatory meds eased that I didn't want to put him down if he is likely to live out his life happily albeit on meds. If we take him back to the vet I'm worried that they will tell us to just put him to sleep as he is a small creature rather than give him options iyswim. So that is why I thought I'd ask here first.
