Hello! I wondered if I could get a bit of wisdom from the owners of these fantastic and adorable dogs.

I have a 4 month old cockapoo who is the absolute best dog I’ve ever met, and have two questions:

1. When do their puppy coats turn into adult ones? Is there any chance he could end up having a very similar adult coat? His puppy fur is just so beautiful and I’ll be sad to see it go!
   

1. When are they usually fully grown? He’s still teeny tiny (dad was a mini poodle) and I wondered if I can tell how big he’ll get?

In answer to your questions, the coat will change but it’s hard to know how much
And most dogs are fully grown at about 10months.

I am... oh dear... I just want to know about coat and size but I do appreciate the pitfalls in finding a good breeder. Hopefully this thread just attracts those with a cockapoo!

Lab owner here. Just wanted to say, I love a Cockapoo. Friendly, busy , pretty little dogs.
I really don’t get the snobby hate on MN. Totally understand the puppy farm hate, but lots of ‘pure‘ bred dogs come from farms.

We have goldendoodles. It is possibly to estimate the size, based on the parents, for example the Poodle mum of ours was large even for a standard poodle so our goldendoodles are large.

Absolutely love goldendoodles... such beautiful dogs. The cocker mum was pretty average for mine so maybe he’ll have a growth spurt!!

Also a cockerpoo owner! He’s only just turned 4 months though so I don’t have the answer to your questions. We also think he’s so beautiful the way he is 😭😭 there is a Instagram called Dougal out west and her cockerpoo is 8 months now and so gorgeous! He is identical as a pup to ours so hoping ours will be like that when older but I’ve also seen pups like ours completely change coat type and colour!!!!

My sister has cockapoos, the difference between the largest and smallest pups from the litter is vast. Their coats are also quite different among them too despite all starting the same so I'm afraid it's not predictable at all. My dpup always loves a 'poo as a playmate in the park as they are such fun. Enjoy.

I am an owner and a vet who sees a lot of cockerpoos.

Coat depends on whether they are more poo or cocker, but mostly about 6 months ( it is worth having a puppy trim at this time).

Size I have seen a massive range from the same litter as small as 5kg and as big as 17kg ( still slim) so impossible to predict most are between 11-14kg.

I have medium sized long coat dogs (Tibetan Terrier), mine usually start changing coat around 9 months up to around 18 months...

I have a springer poodle cross. She is 3 in August.

I’ve just looked through photos on my phone and her coat changed around 6 months old. It also changed colour from a deep red brown to a light brown at the same time. She doesn’t shed at all and I trim her myself. We actually bumped into her brother in pets at home before lockdown and his coat did the same; changed from dark red brown to light brown and we know her sister who looks identical to ours too.

Her size; her mum was a working springer but dad was a miniature poodle. She’s the same size as a cocker spaniel I’d gauge but slimmer. Everything about her appearance screams poodle (other than her colour which is liver/white) but everything about her personality is springer.

We have an agility course in the back garden which she loves to do, she loves her forest walks, is very obedient (now- although teenage stage almost broke me and I’ve had dogs all my life) and loves people and other dogs. I’ve always had spaniels growing up and where she differs is she doesn’t particularly like water (my springers could find a muddy puddle anywhere), she’s not fussed about balls and she was harder to train.
She’s probably the most intelligent dog I’ve had; which made training a longer process I think, whereas my springers were content with food or a ball we had to find what worked for her which took time.

Here is my pup at 10 months. His mum is a cocker spaniel and his dad a miniature poodle. He measures 21 inches to the top of his head and 16 inches to the top of his back. Approx 10kg. I don’t think he will grow much more now.
His fur was apricot and quite straight as a puppy with the odd wave. This started to change gradually as his coat got a bit longer, and around 6 months he started to get his adult coat which is thicker than his puppy fur. His back fur changed from apricot to a redder hue then lighter apricot fur started to grow through it, bit like us when we get grey hair coming through. I don’t think his coat has finished changing because the fur on his head and legs is still soft and fluffy.
The colour of your pup may change quite a bit, it is common due to a fading colour gene the poodle can carry. You will love your dog regardless though. Mine is like a third child to me. He is a total sweetheart.

I have a 6 year old cockapoo and he’s the absolute light of my life.
Re your questions, his coat was a funny one. When I got him at 9 weeks old, it was the same as it is now, but he went through a phase when he was maybe 3-6 months old of a tight curly coat, which was strange as it had been, and has been ever since, very soft and that typical wavy, slightly curly type of coat. He doesn’t moult, just needs a haircut every once in a while.
Mine was fully grown by about a year old, maybe a bit younger. Hard to remember now. He’s small tho, his head is about knee height on me (I’m 5’8).
He’s an absolute little cracker. He’s just a complete joy to have around, a cuddly, squishy little buddy... never met a dog who likes a cuddle so much!
