House Training

I just need some clarification on whether this is normal! I really thought we were starting to get somewhere with our 10 week old puppy (yes I know she’s still only a little baby) with housetraining. She had only had one or two accidents in the house until this weekend. We have been mostly out in the garden and she will actually come inside to wee on the floor Confused then looks at us like ‘look aren’t I clever can I have a treat now?’

We’ve just been ignoring house wees and praising and treating outside wees do we just carry on like this?
My friend has a working cocker and said she used to say no and rub her nose in it but to me that sounds cruel and I don’t want to do that as I know she’s only a baby.
It just seems like she’s regressed!

Just keep doing what you are doing. My cocker took many months to be fully housetrained and by that I mean he didn't have accidents inside and he asked to go out when he needed. If you look on the puppy threads you will find many puppies take weeks to finally get it.

The rubbing the nose in it is so old fashioned (my parents did that to their dog) but fortunately puppy training has come a long way from that.

The praising outside is the most important thing as well as using a command word so they start up associate that with toileting coupled with minimising accidents inside (make sure you use an enzyme cleaner to clean up accidents).

I would be careful that you don't simply leave the door open in this warm weather so they wander in and out rather than understanding that there is an inside and an outside.

It just seems like she’s regressed!

I found all types of behaviour often went through periods of regression right up to adulthood (well over a year of age) so don't worry and just keep on with the training.

Following this. Our pup seems to have regressed to and today has been particularly bad. We had one big wee inside so I took him out, after ten mins came back in where he promptly did another wee, took him back out, when we came back in he did a third!! He's also being an absolute bitey demon today so I think his teeth are bothering him. Praying after a nap we get some outside wees so we have an opportunity to praise. So frustrating as last week he only had one accident and that was entirely my fault as I was distracted and ignored his cues

Wee buggers!!

With the door being open she may not understand the difference between indoors and outdoors and so the garden has just become an extension of the house

I would just keep the back door closed for now so she can't practise going inside if that makes sense.
