Toy Poodle 'looks'/cuts

Hi all I'm after at bit of advice on Toy Poodles. After a long time and a lot of deliberation we have decided to get our first dog. We think that a Toy Poodle would be best for us, unfortunately we don't know any in real life but have done a lot of research.

The only reservation my DH has is that he can't get past the "poodle" image of pompoms, shaved bits, poofy heads/ears, shaved feet etc. His ideal 'look' of a dog would be a cockapoo/cavapoo type dog with curly or shaggy coat not styled.

So my question is is it all down to the cut? It seems so from what I've read but I just want to be able to reassure DH properly. I've seen 'teddy' or 'puppy' cuts on pictures of toy poodles which seem to be what we'd want but would all poodles look like this with those cuts? I hope it's not offensive to poodle owners to want a toy poodle that looks like a cavapoo/cockapoo so sorry if I've offended anyone but it's really a sticking point for him. Can anyone offer any advice? Many thanks in advance.

There is a lovely miniature poodle at our training and they give him the teddy bear cut. He looks lovely and isn’t that different looks-wise to our cockapoo or the labradoodle at training. You just ask your groomer to do that cut. Personally, I ask our groomer to go shorter than teddy bear with our cockapoo because her fur grows really quickly. So ours has a couple of weeks of growth to get to teddy bear and then becomes a bit overgrown a few weeks after that. Our groomer hates doing the traditional poodle cut, she much prefers to do teddy bear on them she says it’s easier and she prefers the look.

Poodles are great. We also don't love the classic poodle look. That's mostly down to a shaved face and feet. Ours is a mini poodle.

We just get him cut short ish all over. People never believe me that he's a poodle because the only poodles people notice are the ones with shaved noses, feet and Pom Poms. They are really very versatile when it comes to how they look.

You can get a "puppy cut" that gives them more of a teddy bear look which is very popular with all the poodle x.

Yep it's all about the teddy bear cut. To look like MissShapes photo. We're getting a mini poodle in a few weeks, I hate the traditional poodle cut of pom poms and shaved feet/nose. Give me a soft fluffy cockapoo looking poodle any day!

This is him with much more hair before we started keeping him shorter. (Can you tell he wasn't keen on the snow)

I think your DH will be suitably cured of his aversion due to MissShapesMissStakes pics. Gorgeous.

Yep all about the cut. Google some poodle photos- it’s nearly impossible to distinguish between a poodle and a labradoodle/cockerpoo with the same cut.

Friend of mine has a gorgeous giant poodle. Everyone they meet comments on how much they love labradoodles, and are gobsmacked to discover he’s a pedigree poodle. Like many they have a certain image in their minds of pompoms and ridiculous haircuts...

Here’s our 15 week old miniature poodle, currently asleep so not easy to get a good pic. He had his first haircut this week so looking pretty short and curly at the moment. The breeder shaved his nose and feet but we’re letting it grow back.

He’s an absolute sweetheart 💕

And yes, people are always surprised when I tell them he’s a poodle not a cross.

Poodles are so lovely, why anyone ever decided to give them those horrendous cuts is beyond me. Congratulations on the new addition.

Oh he's lovely!! I'm really pleased for you. Another name for the puppy cut is cute cut. Just reiterate "NOT a poodly shaved face!!" every time you have him trimmed. You will love having a poodle. So playful out and about but sweet and cuddly at home 🥰. Enjoy!

Lovely!! We are getting a miniature poodle in a couple months and plan to do the puppy/cute cut. Just to say to those who mention about the silly poodle looks - the 'pom poms' were actually originally functional as poodles were bred to be water retrievers and the pom poms kept their joints and central areas warm (the rest was shaved otherwise they would be too heavy to swim in the water) while the shaved face meant they could see when working. Obviously then it became more of a fashion statement, but there are good reasons for its origin. I found it really interesting!

Whoever invented that rediculous pom pom look needs shooting.

It comes from when they were used as water retrievers. Google says:
They were partially shaved because their dense hair would weigh them down in the water, and they would sink. Groomers left hair around the joints, neck, head and chest so that the vital organs and joints stayed warm, and the faces were shaved so that the dogs could more easily retrieve things with their mouths.

Ah what a cutie!
Poodles are fantastic pets.

How are you getting on now?

My mini is 2 this week. It's making me want a puppy again now! But then I've always said no more dogs after this one as he was such a breeze as a puppy that we could never be that lucky again.

Still though - they're so cute!
