Greyhound not eating/fussy

Hi all, had my new greyhound a week. Shes perfect, no problem at all with her apart from her eating.
At the kennels she had Gain 20 (racing food) soaked with gravy from the meat and some cooked meat mixed in. Always a good eater.
I was given a bag of the same food but now I'm soaking it at home with just water she is turning her nose up at it.
I brought a bag of Harringtons and gave it to her dry and she picked at about half when I mixed in a can of Tesco meat in gravy (I dont want to carry on feeding the Tesco food, its crap)
She has lost a bit of weight and I'd like to get her eating again. Any suggestions please? Do I just stick to the dry Harringtons or add something to it? Like what?

Hey did you change the food when her food ran out or did you gradually do it because if you didn’t do it gradually she may have an upset stomach my vet told me when I wanted to change our dogs food to do it over the week or it could upset her it could be that of course I am not vet so it might be worth speaking to your vet for some advice

Did you also soak the Harringtons, some greys prefer kibble soft if what are used to.

If always a good eater it maybe that she's bit unsettled and appetite will return, my greyhound just picked at her meals & barely ate for first week worrying us, also wondering if should change kibble then one day suddenly scoffed it down. She was tubby so we knew she wasn't a picky madam normally.

Hiya yes iv been doing it slowly, half and half etc. But I want her off the Gain food as it's not the best and it's a food for racers.
I did try soaking the Harringtons and she didnt eat it either, just picking.
She was a brilliant eater at the kennels x

Maybe she just doesn't like it - some digs are notoriously fussy.

They do a wet food as well - we mix the two for our pup and he wolfs it down.

One of my lurchers is very, very fussy. He doesn't like kibble if its too large/hard, and won't eat dry food by itself at all. I have to vary his food as he will get bored.
He has Burns Free From dry food at the moment with either Burns wet food, Webbox Chub roll (it stinks, but he loves it and its grain free) or Butchers in gravy. Occasionally we do eggs or tinned pilchards with kibble. Mine does hugely better on wheat free food

Can anyone suggest a good wet food to mix in with the Harringtons that wont cost the earth? X

I make mine myself in the slow cooker. I just do a whole chicken or a packet of chicken thighs, a chopped carrot or sweet potato and some barley. Then I divide it into taleaway containers and she has a tablespoon on top of herdry food.

You could try mixing some tinned fish in with the dry.

We started our lurcher off on good quality dry feed and she literally starved herself - wouldn't touch it for days and lost weight she really couldn't afford to lose. These days we feed her on Butcher's and Naturo (although she recently decided she doesn't like Naturo any more )

I tried her with some fish in tomato sauce and she ate her of her dinner.

It’s so stressful when they won’t eat. My whippet ate kibble as a puppy but got increasingly fussy with it and eventually I gave up feeding kibble as I was sick of trying new brands and him turning his nose up at them.

I think complete wet food is gonna be extortionate so that's not an option for me unfortunately. She is still only eating half with some tesco canned dog food mixed in. Poos are ok, bit windy of an evening and her coat is absolutely gleaming so I dunno! X

My greyhound has Burgess super dog greyhound & lurcher kibble mixed with some Butchers tripe mix tinned dog food from Sainsbury’s. It works well for her - she gobbles it down and has nice solid poos and not much wind... but then she’s not fussy and will eat literally anything.

My dog is quite fussy with kibble. DH bought Harrington's by mistake and she refused it altogether. My cats won't eat the cat version either. She won't eat Burns either.
Dog will eat IAMS as a cheapish alternative but is currently on James Wellbeloved.

I just brought some butchers tinned with tripe to try tomorrow mixed into Harringtons. Hopefully that will do the trick xx

Got two greys.

They have a meaty mix dry complete I get from my local dog supply place. It also has chunks of chewy bits in it and is very meaty smelling. They have a large large scoop of this for breakfast.

For tea they have another very large scoop of it mixed with a whole tin of butchers in tripe.

They eat and burn off loads.
One of my greys only needs a few days of not fancying what's being put down for her and she looks skinnier.

I also cook them up chicken pieces or beef chunks if I get them on offer a couple of times a week.

They probably cost us between £80-£100 a month to feed them both as they eat a lot

Gain is awful stuff. Greyhounds are notoriously fed all sorts of rubbish. My dog arrived with a sack of it and had to eat twice as much by weight as of the far better quality food I switched him over to (gradually).

Butchers is one of the better tinned foods to add to kibble to encourage them to eat.

Maybe that's why she is eating less on Harringtons than Gain as its better stuff? Dont get me wrong, she has lost weight but her coat is gleaming and she seems happy in herself. I picked up a can of butchers to try tomorrow. Is Harringtons ok? Xx

Harringtons isn't the worst; on allaboutdogfood.com it gets a nutrition score of 52%. Gain gets a whole 6%, just for comparison. Seriously, the dogs would be better off eating the bag it comes in.

The canned Butchers gets a rating of 84%, which is excellent.

If you have a look on that site you can search by all sorts of criteria and see what might suit best. If you feed a high quality kibble (one with a high meat content), you should be able to add just a little wet food for taste and/or to ring the changes a bit. If your dog is average greyhound size about a quarter to a third of good tinned added to the suggested-on-the-bag weight of kibble would about do it.

Please go by weight and not by volume though as all foods are not created equal!

You can also get dog gravy but it comes in very small bottles and would probably work out more expensive in the long run. Also 'dog beer' and 'dog prosecco' but I'm not going there...

Also, I should have mentioned this earlier: it would be worth getting her teeth checked. Many (actually most) ex-racing greyhounds have dental problems and if she has a sore mouth that might make her appear 'picky'.

Teeth have been cleaned recently so no issues there.
