Would you expect to be the most difficult:

Having had both, beagles were a million times harder and destroyed my house and garden in the first year. however.. I still prefer them and their hard work ways!

Beagles are great characters but stubborn. I know someone who has owned a number of beagles and she says it's more about working out what they are telling you rather than telling them what to do.

I have a mini poodle so I'm biased. But he's been so easy to train and is so patient and loves his family. He's more person than dog.

I would stay away from a cross. Both intelligent breeds, mixed with stubborn and I can't imagine how their coat would be. Plus finding a good breeder of a cross like that would be almost impossible I'd imagine!

I think they could both be equally bad to be honest.

There does seem to be a real problem with nervousness/being high strung in some lines of poodle.

Beagles have a reputation for being stubborn and independent.

I wouldn’t want either personally.

Would assume in general a beagle to be more 'difficult' than a poodle, but then it depends what elements of behaviour you consider difficult....

I have a beagle and despite all the negativity that surrounds them on here, they're really not that difficult. You just need to work with their instincts rather than against them - so treat them like the scent hound they are rather than a Labrador or spaniel.

I have no experience with poodles (only cockapoos or labradoodles) though.

My beagle went to classes for the first year of his life and was top in all of them. He's two now and gets an hour of exercise every morning, and spends the rest of the day upside down on the sofa snoring! He loves doing tricks and is very food motivated. He was toilet trained quickly, knows all his commands and has good recall too.

The negatives are that he can be noisy and he doesn't like being left alone for too long - an hour or two is his maximum really.

I think that beagles are gorgeous but they have been bred to be working dogs not pets. They're also more of a pack animal than some breeds. I think that the destructiveness and the howling when left alone is because they're often just in the wrong environment.

@1066vegan - yes, I would be inclined to agree with you.

Mine has never been destructive and doesn't bark when left but that's because we rarely ever leave him! We take him to work with us or he goes to my in-laws through the day. Beagles are not dogs that cope well on their own - even with a doggy companion they can become very distressed and destructive.

I also know many (mine included) that have been kicked out of doggy daycare 😂

Isn't it more a question of what sort of dog would suit your lifestyle? Poodles and beagles are very different not just in looks but in behaviour. Poodles were originally gundogs (not that you see many working now) so bred for pliability and a willingness to work with people (I'm not sure how well that has survived their transition to show dog). Beagles as PP have said are pack animals. They are also hounds, bred to follow a scent for, quite literally, miles.

Personally I wouldn't have either, not because I don't like them (I have a soft spot for beagles) but because they wouldn't be a good fit for me, or for us as a family.

I’d rule out the cross, because you’d never know quite which mix of characteristics you would be getting

I have a family member who had a miniature poodle - fantastic little dog who was great with their DC (youngest about 8 when they got her) , friendly temperament and easy to train well

My Godson (early 20's) had a beagle and he wasn't 'badly behaved' and was good to train BUT my Godson walked him miles & had loads of time to spend with him and he was never left home alone. So I guess he didn't have too much need/opportunity to be a little sod

Not a beagle owner, but I have a basset which has similar traits. They are stubborn and people will say bassets and beagles are untrainable. They aren't, but it's just hard work and you need a lot of patience. They love a good scent, not a bad thing, but they can choose to just ignore you.

The Beagle and the cross would be the hardest, the cross you’ve no idea what you’re getting.

Get the poodle. I think a standard is calmer than a miniature.

I have a miniature poodle and he’s been a dream from the beginning. Very easy to train and great with the kids. He has an hours walk a day and spends the rest of the day sleeping.

Miniature poodles are super easy to train they love their families to bits and just want to do the right thing. They are happy to go round the block or walk for miles, they are basically non shedding which was a revelation to me I’m totally converted, acquired from a reputable breeder they are known to be very healthy and long lived mine at 8 has never had a days illness and they don’t bark. Some maybe nervous/highly strung but mine isn’t. Go through the miniature poodle club they should know which repeatable breeders are planning to have litters in the near future. know who’s planning to have puppies. A reputable breeder who’s dedicated to the breed will not want to breed nervous/highly strung dogs.
I’m no expert on beagles I agree they are cute to look at but years ago I used to look after a friend’s beagle you couldn’t ever let it off the lead as she wouldn’t come back and a work colleague has two ditto. I personally wouldn’t want to own a dog you can’t ever let off the lead and both barked or should I say bayed very badly something I personally wouldn’t tolerate.
Any cross will not come from a dedicated poodle breeder as poodle crosses are very frowned upon by poodle breeders who are members of the miniature poodle society.
