Our lovely lab cross was pts on Tuesday, we literally had 2 hours to get our heads round it. Monday night we noticed she didn't want to sit on the sofa , chose the rug instead very unusual. Tuesday morning she seemed to be breathing in her back instead of chest. My Dh took her to the vets who asked us to get her to the nearest animal hospital for an ultrasound and tests. Turns out she had cancer and her lungs and heart were being crushed by all the fluid around them. She had been on walks at the weekend and the day before, we had no signs anything was wrong. She had to be put down a few hours later. We had had her since she was 6 weeks old and she was 12. I just can't forget her standing there with us all crying over her as she was pts. I loved her so much I just keep crying all I want is to be back down the woods with her playing with us chasing sticks, miss her so much. Not asking for advice just wanted to write it all down 😢I feel so sad.

I'm sorry pumpkin that must have been a horrible shock to lose her so suddenly. I hope you'll get to a place where all the good memories displace those of her very short illness. It took me weeks to stop crying randomly after losing my Ddog. Flowers

((((hug))))
That’s pretty much how it happened for us late last year. No time to prepare, not how you imagine your dog getting older and having chance to come to terms with it gradually.
It is so very painful, I know how you feel. It does get easier, I promise, but in the first weeks there seems nothing else to do but cry Flowers

We lost our lovely girl 2 months ago. We chose the date - - those 2 weeks were so awful.
Your ddog had an amazing life right up til the end - and at the end her loving family were with her. Trying to cram in all you want to tell them is hard isn't it?
Sorry for your loss op.

I’m so sorry. We too had this happen to our gorgeous lab in September. In his case they drained the fluid off and tried him on drugs to help him for a week, but it didn’t work. It was quite sudden for him too.

But while it’s good to know they’re not going to suffer. It’s horrible and heartbreaking saying goodbye to a beloved dog. Have a good cry, grieve, treasure your memories. I planted a tree where we buried him. I regularly go and say hello to him, and his best friend that is buried next to him.

It was awful , such a shock . She was so lovely and well behaved no trouble at all, never approached other dogs , loved collecting enormous sticks . Never seen my ds22 cry like that and my dh broke down in the car saying cancer had took his mum now his little mate too😢. Sorry for everyone else thats gone through this too.

I’m so sorry Flowers

We lost a cat in a similar, very sudden and unexpected way. It is definitely harder to come to terms with than gradually seeing your pet go downhill, and having time to prepare. The only saving grace is your lovely dog was happy and enjoying life to the very end. She hasn’t suffered, it is you who has suffered in this situation. Give yourself plenty of time to come to terms with the shock, as well as the bereavement itself. Flowers

I'm so sorry. The pain is so real. Don't deny it or let anyone else minimise it.

My DDog died nearly 10 years ago and I still tell any dog lover/owner I pass about him.

No helpful advice. But I feel for you x

Oh OP I'm so sorry to hear this

We had exactly the same with our old lab a few years ago. We were all in bits for ages afterwards.

Sending huge big hugs to you xxx

Oh my god choosing the date that must have been so hard 😢 what an awful 2 weeks. The vet said she would have had to have had part of her lung removed we couldn't take that option it was only going to give her a few more weeks we couldn't put her through that. If we hadn't had had her put down that day he said she would have collapsed and died in pain within a few days. We weren't allowed in the vets so she was put down in the car park. It's such a shock , when do you get used to them not pottering around the house and going to open the back door first thing in the morning?

@pumpkinpie01

It's awful for you.

However please take some comfort that whilst brutally fast for you, it was wonderfully quick for your ddog. She went from enjoying lovely walks and family life to a quick and peaceful end, without pain or suffering or loads of tests.

It will be a dreadful shock for you but it's probably the best outcome for her - a good life and a quick death with a family that loved her. She was a lucky dog. Focus on the lovely memories you made together
Thanks

@pumpkinpie01 oh am so sorry, sending condolences, had a thread earlier in year- about having to have our dog PTS, it's absolutely devastating. As others have said, your ddog would absolutely have known she was loved, please try and think- of your good memories.

So sorry to everyone else that has gone through this too. Whether it's the same day or they were ill it's still a family member gone. I know she didn't suffer and she did have a great life , she had so many walks . As she was so good other people would take her out too. Hard to get my head round that Sunday she walked 5 miles and died 2 days later. All this lockdown is making it worse we were in such a nice routine , with a walk every afternoon. Now my ds6 says there is no point going without her and won't go for a walk at all.

Op we have 4 other ddogs and the house is eerily quiet. Ddog 1 was quite a force.
She had a brain tumour and had a few aggressive episodes. Hard to manage an 8 stone ddog having one. We made the responsible decision... She was 10 last September and had beaten cancer last April.
True stars in our lives op.

Like I said it's a dreadful shock for you, please give yourselves some time to acclimatise - grieving for a beloved pet can be shockingly hard.
But I think for many of us this would be a wonderful end to a great life. She was lucky to have you and it's lovely that you have her such a good last few days

@Windyatthebeach what a lovely photo love the wording with it too. @Veterinari yes we do take some comfort knowing she did not suffer at all and lead such a full life, it wasn't fair on her to put her through treatment. We have no other pets house feels so strange .

What was her name, Op?
Sending much love, almost exactly the same thing happened to us with our darling German Shepherd, Isabel, in August 2016... elderly, bit deaf but fine otherwise, playing in the field chasing our pup, then collapsed 48 hrs later (cancer tumour had burst they think) Our hearts were broken...
But I can look at her photos now and smile at the lovely life she had and the joy she brought us.
Doesn’t mean to say I don’t have a quiet cry now and again😥
Nothing we can say can help at the moment but it will ease in time. Thoughts are with you and your family xxx🌷🌷
