Can anyone recommend a good book about looking after dogs for a child please?

TIA

A seven year old is not anywhere old enough to look after a dog. They should be taught by example by the parent to respect the dogs space, no hugging or dressing up or make believe games and to learn boy language. Mostly about keeping small children away from dogs!

I agree about most of above but to keep a 7 year old away from dogs? My best fiend has several dogs and 2 of them absolutely gravitate to dd7. If she's on the sofa they sleep on her, they sit by her at the table when she eats and one chooses to sleep with her over sleeping with her owner (I'm in the same room). She definitely doesn't need kept away from them. My dc are going to be very much involved in the training and socialisation of our new pup - the puppy classes we'd been planning before lockdown actively encourage children to come along and get involved. It's better to teach the child correctly surely rather than always trying to keep them separate. I'd understand with a toddler but at 7 they are very able to learn

To answer your question op I don't know of any child specific books but DD's have been watching videos on YouTube on puppy training. There's some good ones out there just learn some tips and get her to do what you do

Jeeeez, NoMore, OP isn't talking about the child looking after the dog, just teaching some of the hows and whys.

I don't know of any books - I think I had one years ago when my DC were small, so I think they exist, though. What you could do is put together a scrapbook of dog pictures and go through puppyhood, leaving the mum and litter, settling in with the new family, what kit you'll need, toilet training, sleep, giving the puppy space, how puppies learn from consistency, all that sort of thing. A great home schooling project, as if you need another one!

My dd and I both read Easy Peasy Puppy Squeezy when we got our puppy. It was really useful and gave dd some good ideas re training. My dd was slightly older though at 13yo.

Thanks for sensible replies.

Why on earth would I be expecting a 7 year old to look after a dog? You can't ask anything in the Dog House without getting snippy remarks! Ridiculous.

Rubie, some people just can't help themselves. The negativity does my head in.

Ignore the negative comment @RubieRose - there's nothing wrong with getting your 7yo involved!

My DC of about that age have read and enjoyed this book, I think it's really good for helping them learn when NOT to pet the dog for example
