Yesterday we had to put our beloved Ruby to sleep. Ruby was 14, she had a stroke previously which left her blind in one eye, had heart problems and was final stage kidney disease. Despite all that she was a happy, funny, full of life and heaps of personality little dog.
Yesterday she had hemorrhagic diarrhoea. It looked like someone had emptied a jar of strawberry jam over the floor. We decided that this was enough for her and didn't want her on more drugs to go with the 8 she was already on. I am an ex vet nurse so know the score.
We had to have her PTS in the boot of the car on a long drip line as we couldn't go in with her. They took her in to place a catheter in her and brought her out half sedated. They started the drip when we were ready. It wasn't the way I wanted her to go at all but under the circumstances at the moment it was the best I could have.
Now I'm having doubts about it all. Should I have tried on meds. I know in my head that if an owner had come with a dog like Ruby , PTS would have been suggested. Its just so fucking hard when it's your own.

I did do the right thing. Please talk me down from doubts .

I'm so sorry. You definitely did the right and kind thing. Had to do it recently and it's utterly devastating. Your beautiful girl knew and gave such love. Be kind to yourself. Thanks

You did absolutely the right thing, an alternative decision would have been for your benefit not hers.
Sorry it was under such tough circumstances, much love to you.

People love their dogs and seem to be far kinder in letting them go before they are racked with pain.
My heart goes out to you that you loved her enough to stop her pain, rather than keep her with you.
You have my respect.

As a vet, you did the right thing. Both her kidney and heart disease would have only progressed.
It is natural to feel guilty and question your decision but you acted selflessly and did the right thing for her.
A vet nurse once said to me ' You'd rather have your animal put to sleep a week too early than a day too late' and this so true.
Take care & try to remember all of the good memories. 14 is a wonderful age to make it to and she's lucky to have had an owner that loves her so much .

You know you did the right thing. I have had the same experience recently. The regret is the grief talking. Your head knows the truth. You have to ride the waves. Grief is the price we pay for love.

I’m so sorry 🌷

But you absolutely did the right thing 💕

You’re an ex vet nurse-you know this was best for Ruby. Trust your knowledge, not your broken heart.

It hurts SO much x but it was the kind thing to do for Ruby x

Yes, it was the right thing. It is better a day too early than a moment too late but it doesn't mean we question ourselves any less Flowers, I am so sorry for your loss.

Absolutely right decision. Mine had kidney failure too - she had stopped eating the day before and was vomiting by time I got her PTS . You were right - she would not have wanted that to happen again.

You did the right thing. If she had gone downhill in the middle of the night and suffered you would regret not doing it. I've always said the same, that I would let her go, even if it tore my heart out rather than let her suffer for even a day. I won't allow it. She's my best friend and nothing and no one will ever hurt her, not even me. Keeping her here too long would have hurt her.

We had our ddog pts 4 weeks ago today.
She had a suspected brain tumour and we chose the date for the appointment.. Second guessed ourselves in the days up to..
She went peacefully - and a lot less emotional about it than us.
Sorry for your loss op.
A beautiful ittle ddog.
