Harness that a dog can't reverse and pull it over their heads! BOTH my dogs just did this! Diagram.

Just went for a walk in these harnesses.

Firstly my eldest dog was really nervous as we went to a new park and we had to cross an 8 lane parkway 😭 He started frwkaing out and pulled backwards away from me. His harness was tight but it started to slip over his head.

I had to carry him.

The wind picked up and for some reason he kept doing this!

Then at a park bench my puppy got tangled up around the leg and did the same thing, panicked and pulled back and she got her arms out and it was just round her neck like a collar

I shit myself

Does anyone know of a harness that will keep them secure from pulling backwards?

What brand of harness do you have OP? My lab used to do this before we got her fitted for a Perfect Fit harness, she can't now.

Another vote for Perfect Fit. But a Halti lead with clips at both ends, and walk the dog with clips on the front and back of the harness.

I have perfect fit for my two and absolutely love them but saying that I think a very determined dog could pull themselves out of any harness (or collar for that matter). A certain amount of "managing the environment" is required too.

Get a Halti training lead, it’s double ended, one clip to the collar and one to harness, even if he slips out he’s still attached to collar.
I use Julius K9 harness, never had an issue.

Just re read your post and my dogs would also not be happy at all walking near 8 lane traffic! Maybe just walk them somewhere else? Somewhere you won't be scared for their safety? Surely would be better for you both

Ruffwear webmaster, or similar type with the extra belly strap. They are recommended for former street dogs who are at risk of spooking and running off. My dog is snake like and can calmly step out of 'normal' harnesses, but not this one

You need something with an extra belly strap, as long as your dog has a definite waist they're very effective at preventing dogs pulling back out of the harness. One of my dogs is a consummate escape and the extra strap is the only thing that stops her getting out of a harness in seconds. I've also got sighthounds who, because of their build, can be quite good at slipping harnesses even when they're not trying.

The Ruffwear Webmaster and Flagline harnesses are pricey but absolutely excellent. I think Pets At Home do a much cheaper version but I've got no idea what the quality is like. There's also the Hurtta Trail but I've not tried that one personally.

The Houdini harness from Indi-Dog is also excellent (and much cheaper, even for a custom fit one) but they seem to have had some difficulty recently filling orders.

There are other harness makers producing similar designs so it's worth having a look around.

He's an anxious dog and does it near any cars.

But this is the first time he's realised he can get the harness off by going backwards. So then he just kept doing it.

As Cornish said earlier, your harness has a ring at back and on the chest - get a double ended halti training lead, and attach to both places,
Alternatively if he also wears a collar, one end of lead on harness and one on collar.

My dog isn't tiny, but she's small: 6.5 kilo.

She can't wriggle out of her harness as it fits around her middle and around her shoulders. She can't get the bit that fits around her middle off because it's stopped by her front legs.

Have you had your dogs' harnesses properly fitted. I see the one you're showing is from amazon. You might find you get a better fit if you go to a good pet shop and get them to fit it for you. Also the top of that one looks very wide, which looks as if it would allow your dogs to get their heads through it easily.

Are you sure you've got it tightly enough around the dog. It should fit quite snuggly around the dog's body.

I'm always seeing dogs wearing harnesses with the harness hanging down from the dogs body underneath, completely useless if the dog wanted to get out of it.

Just realised you said your dog backed out of the harness. Sounds like the harness is too loose.

The dog shouldn't be able to get his legs through it while it on his body.

I walk a Houdini dog and the only harness (of the ones I tried) that he can’t back out of is the Ezydog chestplate.

Perfect fit harness!
I have one on my 22kg dog.. my brother has one on his 5kg mini dog!
I've tried several and nothing comes close, because each piece (it has three sections and each can be sized for your dog's shape) is individually sized and because of the y shape front they cannot back out of it.

(Mine also backed out of a Julius K9 just as you describe..scared the hell out of me!)

I had that happen with my dog, like removing a jumper when he put his head down and moved backwards. Luckily he was just being a little stubborn so I could quickly get it back in place rather than trying to bolt. It was fitted snuggly & type that had been recommended for breed as being safer, as a temporary measure I clipped a safety link strap I had (like those sold for head collars) to his collar till I bought a new harness.

The ruffwear webmaster with the extra girth strap makes it pretty impossible to escape and the handle is useful to boost up or steady an injured or elderly dog, its great quality & dog has regularly strain tested over the years. There's a lot of similar copies available cheaper now but not sure how good they are.

I've not bought from here but noticed they make that type of harness.

Help..... My collie pulls back whenever we're out and if I stop 2 talk 2 sum1 and he doesn't want 2 stop he pulls and manages 2 slip out of a fitted harness. So I've bn using a collar and lead but again tonight I stopped and b4 I knew it he pulled himself free of the collar and lead. What would you recommend if uve had the same issue

Another vote for perfect fit, it’s washable & you can find a size that fits your dog plus easier to put on. My dog has a narrow deep chest and some of the mainstream harnesses don’t fit between his front legs

I bought a perfect fit harness at a show where the person on the stand selected all the sizes with my dog there, put the harness on and declared it was fine. Dog pulled out of it within ten mins. 🤷‍♀️
