Dog chews

We have a year old lab. Is it ok to give her rawhide chews or pigs ears? She has a coffee wood bone which she loves, just want to give her something different. Kongs and Kong bones etc get chewed (eaten) as do any dog toys. Luckily she doesn’t chew anything she is not given by us. I’ve heard antlers aren’t good for them as they splinter? Are there any indestructible toys you could recommend too. Thanks.

There are loads of natural chews available on the market. Pigs ears, pizzles, olive wood, rabbit ears, deer legs, etc etc. No to rawhide.

I let mine have antlers / horns etc. They are in the lounge not by his bed so he's supervised with them. He's a very destructive chewer and they, and the olive wood, channel that urge like nothing else.

Thank you, both very helpful. We always gave our last lab rh but recently heard it’s not good for them. I will look into the alternatives, she really loves a good chew! I put a carrot in the freezer for her yesterday, she loved it but it only lasted minutes! Thanks again, off to pet shop this morning :)

Ours loves antlers. He's got through a few. Never had them splinter and thought the reason that they're good is that they don't?
He never has them unsupervised though.
Pigs ears are also good but they stink!

Rawhide is really bad - please avoid it. I gave it to ours when he was a puppy thinking the stories were just scare tactics and he nearly choked - if I hadn't been in the same room as him he'd probably have died.

He now gets a mixture of the following - pigs/cow/goat/rabbit ears, yakkers chews, antlers, pizzle sticks, stuffed hooves - basically anything that's 100% natural. He also likes the rawhide free bones from PaH but they only last a few minutes Grin

Great thanks. She’s had a pigs ear, disappeared into garden with it, looking happy! Would you just give 1 of the above chews per day? Obviously the wood/antler not included in this as they don’t really eat that (looking at lounge floor covered in bits of chewed coffee wood 🙄)

Yeah, I limit him to one a day otherwise it's a bit fatty and he gets runny poo Grin

But he has unlimited access to yakkers, an antler and empty cows hooves as they don't really eat them as such.

We have a buffalo horn - lasts months despite her wrecking everything in two minutes normally. No shards either.

No bones or rawhide in this house.

A pigs ear every day is a LOT. www.petmd.com/blogs/dailyvet/2009/June/08-4207 Have a look at that for calorie ideas.

I didn't think antlers splintered but dogs can break teeth on them if more power chewers.

We used to buy antlers, until ddog sliced mouth open on a sharp bit. He never stopped chewing and we never noticed until we saw the blood on the carpet. Didn't need stitches or anything but the shard was needle sharp so we didn't buy again.

He now gets cows ears (less fatty than pigs) and trachea/whistle blowers.

Mimbledog loves antlers and is a hard chewer. I accidentally got a fallow deer antler once and he got through it in about 5 minutes so make sure it is really hard antler not a soft flat one.

The Yakkers yak milk chews are excellent but expensive and when it gets too small for safe chewing you can put it in the microwave and you get an amazing cheese puff which Mimbledog carries around for a bit before wolfing down.
