Is there a point to dog bandanas?

A friend of mine has started selling them. Do they serve any kind of purpose, or are they just for decoration?

No purpose, purely decoration.

Some are meant to cool dogs in the heat if made from the correct material

Some are sprayed with calming spray for anxious dogs

The rest are there to make the dogs look like dicks

Thanks everyone. I'm meeting this friend tomorrow and I want to be positive about her new venture, but I hate the idea of decorative clothes for dogs. Will just have to wish her well and move the conversation along I suppose...

They can be useful. Last summer was very hot when we were travelling and on a couple of days I made one up from a tea towel, soaked it in water and used it to help our dog keep cool. She seemed to appreciate it.

Welll...where I used to live, a dog bandana (or neckie) was used to signal the owner’s sexual preferences a la handkerchief code:

Not sure you should tell her that though!

They stop breeds that slobber from having a constant wet chest - think Newfoundlands etc.

In the recent very wet muddy weather my dog has been wearing an equafleece onsie because it helps protect her from a lot of the mud. She hates being bathed.
Doggy clothes/ accessories are very popular at the moment so your friend might do quite well.

you can get 'nervous dog' ones.

but you can also get leads for that purpose.

I think they look cute Blush

I don't really like them myself but as PP said dog accessories are big business so I would just wish your friend well in her new business.

I think they look cute. But I like cats in tiaras, so I'm no judge of taste.

Also, 99.99% of dogs who wear bandanas are medium-sized grey shaggy lurchers. Fact.

“but I hate the idea of decorative clothes for dogs”

Thing is, bandanas don’t stop them doing anything or get in their way at all, so while they’re not my cup of tea... I don’t see it as any different to people who buy really expensive collars...

I had a french mastiff. A massive bandana would have been very useful!

Long necked hound dogs (greyhounds, whippets, dachshunds, etc) often wear snoods to help keep them warm on very cold days.

My dog wears one but it says 'I'm blind' and is neon yellow so serves a purpose.

What’s wrong with onesies? My dog wears an equafleece in the winter so she doesn’t get too muddy. It means I only need to wash her feet & not all of her after our walk. She’s a dirt magnet.

Agreed. I have an equafleece for when it's muddy and it's great.

I used to hate dogs in clothes too. Then I got a dog who refuses to leave the house on wet and muddy days. Now I’m much less judgmental.

I've no issue with clothes that serve a purpose. Decorative things seem unnecessary and a bit unfair on the dog. They're not dolls.

Our papilloma wear bandanas to stop them getting their chest hair in their water. They’re only little and like to dive up to their shoulders in the water bowl.

No purpose, just a bit of fun. My ddog1 wears onesies as he is a naturally very thin, fine coated dog and he gets cold even inside
