Anyone able to recommend dog DNA kits please? I'm curious to DDogs breeds... The ones I have seen on Amazon seem to have quite a few negative reviews..

Wisdom Panel

If potentially has breed susceptible to Multi-Drug Resistance Gene (MDR1) then the wisdom 3 test which is only available on the main site also tests that. Its more expensive but do regular special offers (may have one for Valentines or whatever is next) & if buy via link with topcashback also get decent cash back.

I'm as sceptical about dog DNA tests as I am human ones but Wisdom seem to be the most popular. Probably because they've now got an adequate array of samples to make comparisons with. It's an expensive way of getting a potentially unreliable result though.

Hmm...did wonder...have heard too many accounts of odd matches/so vague that results are meaningless

I heard someone say some companies need a photo of your dog, never understood why unless it's just guessing based on the photo!

I think its advanced a fair bit over the years. My 2 & a friends UK rescue dogs all seemed accurate.

I had a chat with a lady who worked at Animal Health Trust's lab that does DNA health testing & she reckoned Wisdom were most reliable available in UK as has largest database of breeds & had even visited the lab they use to process the EU swabs in Denmark(?)

Wisdom Panel are very popular but they’re also rather notorious for how often extremely rare and unusual breeds turn up in their results.

Embark seem to fare better than WP when testing mixed breed dogs whose parentage is either partly or entirely known.

I’ve run both a Wisdom Panel and an Embark test on the same dog, purely out of curiosity. The WP results predictably included several rare breeds whilst the Embark ones were at least more realistic and believable. The extra stuff included with the Embark test (health testing, colour genetics, genetic diversity, etc.) was very interesting and I think the cost was worth it for that alone but then I’m a bit of a nerd when it comes to stuff like that anyway.

I was fairly sure my lurcher was a staffy x greyhound & it came back as that, but multi-generation bull lurcher breeding & higher % greyhound to staffy.

Always seems to be a bit like the York Test. You never get a simple answer, always one that's suspiciously long and always contains the usual suspects.

If you just curious rather than serious, and can afford to indulge that curiosity then give it a go.
