My dog saved my life

No point to this thread really except as a thank you to my wonderful whippet! After suffering for years from anxiety and ptsd we made a decision to get a family dog. We are dog people and understand the challenges of dog ownership but I had hesitated - would the pressure of a dog be worse for my anxiety? Would dog ownership cause extra stress? Anyway, my partner works from home and would take full responsibility for said dog so we went for it. Fast forward to now and she hasn't just changed my life, she saved me. I go out on my own with her every day, twice a day and I love it. I found it painfully difficult to leave the safety of home without my family by my side and wouldn't have entertained walks alone. We graduated puppy school. I did all the classes with her on my own for 6 weeks. I haven't done anything remotely like that for 5 years. I am happy. I am fulfilled. I am no longer scared of everything. She loves me with her whole heart and we just had an instant connection, it is like she fixed all the broken parts of me and made me whole. I am forever grateful to her and will give her the best life, always. Thank you my pup.

This is so lovely to read.
My dog saved me too. Last December I was going through a terrible time and I went to the drs for help. I told them the only reason I am still alive is because my dog waits at the window every night for me to get home from home. I couldn't imagine leaving him because of that. My dr got me the help I needed, but my dog gave me the reason to live. They are very special and I believe - guardian angels.

I love this post, I have a little pug and he is my world. My and my husband have just been though the sad loss of our first pregnancy. The worst week of our lives. Without the dog we wouldn’t have had a reason to get out, walk and talk openly. He makes you smile and has helped us so much. We are so lucky to have such wonderful creatures in our lives.

Lovely post.
My dog also got me through a terrible time. The kids were very small and were of course my principle reason for living at the time but I couldn't put anything on them obviously. When they were at school I would spend the whole day sobbing and just try to get myself together for pick up time. Everything was very dark-Until I decided-out of nowhere really- to get a Dog. Best thing I ever did. Like you he made me get up and out and he is always there with a cuddle and a wagging tail-even now when I'm over the worst of it.

I'm glad you are on the up OP.

Wow, I didn't expect so many wonderful responses. I'm not sure how to reply to each individually but how lovely that so many dogs have helped so many people, I hope you all continue to feel much better with the help of your furry guardian angels. There is so much more I could say about my darling pup but I won't get soppy. It is overwhelming to read that people have had similar experiences and been helped by their beloved dogs like I have, aren't we a lucky bunch?!

I'm off work with stress related problems. My Ddog is the reason for getting out of bed. Love her to bits. The time I'm out with her allows me to forget the rubbish.
I have been out with her today, so many people stopped us to say what a beautiful dog she is.

Aww, OP, I totally get this. I’ve got a lot to be grateful for because of my mop of a dog.

My ddog1 has been through so much with me. Sadly I have made the decision to have her pts next week. A suspected brain tumour has altered her behaviour and it's hell on earth watching her suffer. We have a new dpuppy and she is full of love and wonder just like ddog was 10 years ago... Cuddles off both are keeping me going...
Hold your ddogs tight people..

OP not soppy at all, it is lovely that your Whippy has given you such a boost.

As a fellow Whippet owner (and possibly biased), I have to agree they really are a special breed. They are just like cuddling a bag of elbows!

When we had a family bereavement, I'm convinced it was the DDog who pulled my DM through some really dark times. My DM's mental health was dangerously slipping, we would spent time just looking at pictures on a particular Whippet group on Facebook, and it was enough to get her talking and pull her through. Her dog gave her a reason to do something & to care for, even when she wasn't caring for herself.

Flowers to you Whynosnowyet
