AIBU about "designer" dogs

Now I know I'm gonna cause chaos get torn into hopefully agreed with but it's getting silly now with all these new silly new "breeds" of dogs. Cockerpoos sprocks. Jugs. Yorkipoos. Labradoodles. To name but only a few. After reading an article from the man who breed the first labradoodles and fully admitted it was the worst mistake he ever made. It made me think that yes I'm not the only one plus the people at the dog care home. Vets. And rescue I know that also Agree all these dogs that people are paying silly money for hundreds of pounds are nothing but mongrels.
When they breed again the new pups will be even further down the line as mongrels.
Now I know all you Mumsnet people are gonna start going loopy at me but if you think the dogs are so perfect and I do think they are all beautiful I love dogs more than most people there's not much I don't know about them I work with them everyday I have my own.
But try entering one for best in show for the kennel club. Try for any show for the kennel club.
They are not pedigree dogs.
Sorry. Xxx

Please don't say "sorry" when you don't mean it at all, in any way.

I understand and share many of the criticisms about so called "designer dogs". The man who bred the first labradoodles did so in an attempt to breed an assistance dog that didn't shed/was hypoallergenic. There's no such dog, end of discussion.

I have a labradoodle who is almost 12, she was bred by an excellent breeder who isn't out to make her fortune but loves the breed. A more obedient, affectionate all round good family dog you won't find. She's needed more training than any other dog I shared my life with. That's the case for many of the poodle crosses. You don't necessarily get the best of both breeds that's for sure. You also don't know which breed characteristic will dominate.

They aren't mongrels, mongrels are dogs with unknown history, where many breeds/other mongrels come together. It's hard to find those lovely cross breeds these days - any dog shelter is likely to be full of staffordshire/bull breed crosses, old German shepherd dogs and sadly dogs who may have been imported by people who met them on holiday in India, Spain anywhere in Europe and paid lots of cash to bring them home, only to find they're not suited to living in houses with families.

The Big Problem as I see it, is the myths about poodle crosses being good for people with allergies, easy to train, good with children etc etc. Also, being bought as First Dogs by folks with good hearts but little experience of dogs, never mind poodle crosses.

agree they are mongrels and there are lots of problems (health & behaviour) regarding interbreeding with puppies now.

I bet they don't breed a shitpoo, pooshit, cockshit Grin

There are better dogs in rescue centres who need loving homes.

How about reading one of the myriad of threads already existing on this subject before starting yet another goady and unpleasant one designed to upset people.
Does this make you feel better about yourself today?

I am sorry to people to people that have these breeds people in my family and friends have them.
Yes they are mongrels as they are not a single breed and after been mates again to have more litters they will go even further down the line.
I think people are very silly paying stupid money for a puppy because they are at the moment trendy to have.
The theft of puppies is so high at the moment for these reasons taken from the mother far to early to make money. Dogs taken from gardens. Stolen from people who are walking in parks.
If the first person who breed the labradoodle has come across an said he regrets it for what he has created me and a lot of other people can't be wrong.

Why is being a ‘mongrel’ a bad thing?

A dog is a dog.

Or are you some sort of weird eugenicist that requires inbred dog purity at all costs?

@TrollTheRespawnJeremy no I'm not saying it's a bad thing I love all dogs mongrels are fabulous in fact they actually have better health than most pedigree breeds.

My point is money and the amount of silly new breeds and money people are willing to pay. I know people will pay what they want for what they want and it's up to them but puppy farms are growing at a shocking rate and getting hidden so well.

@HowlsMovingBungalow
Have you considered I haven't seen these sort of post before!!

I'm trying to educate people on puppy farms and their puppies having health and behaviour issues.

Like I said I have friends and family with these dogs and they are very beautiful but I have said the same to them and they agree my step brother who has a sprocker is having major issues with her.

I’m not sure why you think Mumsnet is a cheering squad for designer dogs. This board is not that approving of designer dogs, just check out any post where people are thinking about getting one and asking for opinions.

No one thinks puppy farms are a good thing.

Educating people about the puppy trade and puppy farms is a reasonable endeavour, but creating a combative I’m right your wrong OP is just going to put backs up. Not really sure what you’re trying to achieve here other than cause a bunfight.

Bearded Collies - a breed with a COI of almost 15%! I do hope you are among the breeders taken real steps to address that because it is way, way too high and shortens the average lifespan of the breed by about a year.

By all means try to educate people about farmed dogs but do so in a way more likely to effect real change and less likely for people to just dismiss you as a rude show off. If, of course, your real aim IS to improve dog welfare and not just have a few minutes of smug.

While you are at it, do look at the farmed statistics that place some pure breeds among the most likely to be farmed (over and above cross breeds).

Given the millions of these dogs being sought and bought, perhaps it's time the Kennel Club actually stepped up and did something to bring them into the fold and thus extend the tiny it of protection it provides to pure breeds to them as well? Again, assuming the KC's main objective is dog welfare and not elitism.

I don't need some random opinionated loon on the internet telling me what they think of my dog. In the same way, you presumably don't want to hear my opinion on your written English.
My mixed-breed dog (not a mongrel, actually, as his parentage is known and there are only two 'breeds' involved) is perfectly well-behaved and a credit to his type. Perhaps your step-brother is just a bad owner, who has trained his dog poorly.

I TOTALLY agree.

The one that drives me insane the most is the french bulldog chain. They are ill health dogs with so many health problems and die young. My friend has a french bulldog and he has seizures and fits, throws up 10 times a day and overheats off a small walk. Not to mention the snorting and unable to breathe.

My friends recently bought a french x chihuahua it's just wrong.

As it took the kennel club more than 200 years to recognise the jack russell, I wouldn't hold my breath on them recognising the cockapoo anytime soon.

Though, as Jack Russells remain one of the very healthiest and hardiest breeds with none of the inbreeding problems in other breeds, perhaps it was a benefit that the kennel cub ignored them for so long.

Designer dogs are crossbreeds.

Mongrels are of unknown/multi heritage.

Like the latchkey dogs when I was growing up. Dogs either roamed around with a bitch coming home pregnant and the stud unknown, or Karen bred her collie/lab/GSD type bitch with Bob's black sort of lab but no-one knew for sure.

Pedigree dogs for the most part were rare, owned by 'well to do' people, and certainly were not allowed to roam or even have organised covers with another of a different breed.

I do agree that the designer dog trend is awful.

And if you're stupid enough to believe the tabloid writers' inane headline-grabbing label of "designer breeds," then more fool you and anyone else who pays a premium for one. I paid no more than I would have done for a Labrador or retriever.

I feel a though this post isn't getting at the dogs themselves, but the fact people pay 600-1000 for a dog that has been crossbred. You can get beautiful cross breeds and puppies from shelters if you look properly.

It's sad that people are still funding breeders for the industry to get so large and out of hand that it's now resulting in poor conditions and over-breeding.

The reduction of latchkey dogs - while a noble cause - could well be one of the key reasons for the rise of the designer dog. You would find it almost impossible to find a fully mixed breed puppy these days - the type that changed hands for a tenner down the pub in days gone by.

That created a space into which designer dogs - popular crosses AND some breeds, such as pugs - have been moved.

I think there's more to it than just that but am growing concerned that by taking away random matings between dogs we have damaged the species as a whole, in some way. At least here in the UK. I don't know what the answer is because roaming dogs wouldn't have fitted into today's UK anyway and for some of those dogs, the lack of control was linked to a lack of care and very low welfare. But it feels like our dogs should have been getting healthier but they are not, even the pure breeds. They are deteriorating.

I don’t like them. I think they’re expensive for what is effectively a cross breed and a bit of a gimmick. Also worry re them not being KC registered and thus more vulnerable to puppy farming and interbreeding. (I know puppy farming in KC registered dogs happens too.)

That said, there are benefits to cross breeds (assuming you get the good bits of both breeds). If its done responsibly.

Im always concerned that fashionable breeds leads to purchases on a whim and unsuitable people owning dogs.

Agree! I have seen it's now the trend to own dobermans. Meaning people who don't have the slightest clue are owning this glorious dogs without providing correct care.

I also know of a person who lives in a 3 floor flat with a husky. Keeps it in a crate.
