Reported friend

Me and another friend finally decided the time had come to report another friend to the rspca tonight Sad they are coming to pick her dog up in the morning and now I'm panicking.

The backstory is said friend is an end stage alcoholic, in and out of hospital. She often goes in and we don't know about it, and leaves her dog on his own. Her family supposedly feed him. We had looked into it before and felt stuck, as not able to get him rehomed as chipped to her. Had food water and shelter so rspca wouldn't touch. Tonight however we dropped by her flat as we suspected she had been in hospital several days and not told her family.

The poor thing was so hoarse and dry he didn't bark Sadhe was really really hungry. Shit on the floor and other things in the flat that are too disgusting to detail here. Medicine everywhere and everything chewed or pissed on. Empty bottles of vodka all over the flat. We fed watered and walked him and called the rspca who will pick him up in the morning.

BUT we went to see the friend in hospital and ended up having a bit of a go at her. She is now saying she will self discharge tomorrow and go home to tidy and feed the dog.

I have a nasty feeling she will spin the rspca a line about how she has been ill and will sort things out. She will also hate us for this but we are past caring, we just want the dog to be looked after by someone else.

I just hope they don't let her keep him. She loves the dog but is not capable of caring for him Sad

Well you obviously did the right thing, poor dog. But I'd be worried about what the rspca will do with it.

You absolutely did the right thing.

The two things I hate most are animal cruelty and alcoholics so to be fair I am actually just going to rant. She doesn't love the dog she loves her alcohol. If she still says she loves it then let it be rehomed to people who will truly love it. Selfish and cruel she should be ashamed of herself. So effing angry at this woman!!

Well yes you're right, she doesn't love him in the way a responsible pet owner does and she is very selfish (and deluded - she doesn't see that she is in the wrong). We have said time and time again he needs to be rehomed but she wouldn't listen and it's not something you can force. The rspca even said tonight not to take him from the flat as would be considered as theft. I'm glad they are coming tomorrow.

It's sounds like a very difficult situation but sounds like you absolutely did the right thing.

You did the right thing Flowers
I had to report a friend to the RSPCA for neglect and the worse thing was she didn't think there was anything wrong with the situation she was keeping the dogs in. It was hard but I know the dogs are better off now.

This wouldnt have been an easy thing to do but I think you did the right thing. She needs to be in a better place to be a to care for the dog. It's a very sad situation

Not great news. Rspca inspector met us at the flat this morning and although he was concerned at the situation the dog isn't malnourished or looking in a bad state Hmm.
He also said he wasn't allowed to enter the flat but he looked through the window and we showed him pictures.
He did however phone the hospital and then went to see my friend and he called her brother. Apparently every time she goes in hospital they are meant to call social services who will then arrange kennels. Like that's gonna happen!
So this weekend the rspca will go and feed the dog at the flat as friend due to be discharged Sunday. So really although there's a record of this now, he's left in the same situation. It's not like she looks after him properly when she's at home. All a bit shit really! My friend hasn't said anything about us calling them even though it's obviously us, but is now feeling justified I think as has quoted about him not being malnourished etc Sad

It’s very infuriating seeing this, would your friend allow you or your other friend to have him? Could you have him?
She needs to be made to see that this is not a life for a dog and to let him go.

Just keep monitoring the situation and call the RSPCA every time poor dog is left. Hopefully eventually something will happen.

I'm infuriated too. I can't have him as I have a dog (who likes cats but not dogs) and two cats and she wouldn't let me anyway!
I will keep a close eye and phone them again first sign of abandonment.

Good news. Friend in hospital again and agreed for rspca to collect her dog and he was picked up today - they hope to find him a home asap. He's a small friendly dog so I think someone will be able to look after him and give him the home he deserves Smile

I'm glad the dog has gone to kennels. Fingers crossed for a better future for him.

I hope your friend pulls out of this but it sounds unlikely.

Good news for dog - you did the right thing back in Feb. Hope he has a lovely new life.

You did completely the right thing in being the dog's advocate - could have been a very sad ending otherwise.

Well done, OP, that can't have been easy and it sounds like the best outcome for the dog.

Don't feel bad op.
I reported a friend some years ago. She never knew it was me though.
No regrets at all.
