Should I claim on pet insurance?

I wonder if anyone can advise me? I've recently spent £250 on treatment for my dog and we have an excess of £75. I would like to claim but I'm worried my insurance cost will jump next year if I do. Or does that happen anyway? I'd rather not claim if that's the case.

I think it depends on the company.

I am with petplan as they advertised that they don't put the premiums up for claims (it goes up based on age, breed etc).

We have made many claims raging from a few hundred to a few thousand.

Mine goes up regardless! Do you have lifetime cover? If so, then I would claim.

Your claim would be #175 after the excess and the insurer might then exclude anything to do with that bodypart. My friends dog had an ear problem which was claimed for but then after that, nothing at all to do with the ears was allowed. I'd personally suck up the cost and try to forget it.

Ah yes I forgot I have life cover so I don't worry about any exclusions as I am covered as long as I stick with them.

If there’s the slightest chance he may need further treatment down the line or have any further issues you need to claim. If you don’t and a more expensive treatment is needed that you do need to claim for they won’t cover it as they’ll say it was a previous injury/condition which you hadn’t told them about. My dog needed an elbow X-ray for suspected congenital problem, turned out not to be that and he has been fine, vet advised me to claim as if any treatment further down the road needed when they put the claim they would have to disclose that it was a problem previously and they may not cover it.

If it helps my dog has had nearly 6k of treatment since October, my policy renewal was January and I was absolutely dreading it as it’s an ongoing issue which is still requiring treatment, but my premiums went up less than £10 a month. I was hugely relieved! He will rack up at least 2k this year in claims, I will let you know what next year’s renewal is!

Absolutely this. Please do.

My friend fell foul of this and it was honestly just heartbreaking.

Even if your premium does go up, if doggo needs serious treatment in future that's related to whatever they had this time then you will be so, so relieved you declared.

Hope they're ok, please do declare it!
