I am fucking heartbroken. He was a good age for a bonkers Welsh Springer and I knew it was coming. But it is just horrific.

Alphonso the First, I loved you from the moment I saw you. When you ran over and bit my knuckles and tried to eat my hair.

You could be an absolute shit, your recall was appalling, you cost me thousands upon thousands of pounds in vet fees. You once ate an entire packet of butter, foil and all, and had to have emergency surgery to remove the foil from your twisted guts.

But you were also an absolute joy. You knew when I was sad, and would come sit and rest your big head on my knees and huff at me until I stroked you. You knew when it was evening treat time, and come woofing over demanding your chicken wing.

You loved dd better than I could have ever wished. You taught her how to walk, and would stand so calmly while she was pulling herself up on you. You whined for her when she went to nursery. You licked her little face when was having a tantrum and brought her out of it immediately.

I am bereft without you. Your cocker sister is hunting for you and it breaks my heart. We loved you with all our hearts, thank you for making them so full.

I have nothing to say other than I'm so sorry. We had to do this with one of our boys and slots the worst decision we've ever had to make. I hope he's at peace.

Thank you all so much. The doghouse is wonderful for a place to share grief.

He was so calm whilst it was happening, just rested his big old head in my lap and huffed at me the way he always did. I know it was absolutely the right thing to do for him. But it hurts so bloody much. He was such an infuriating and hilarious boy!

Ah bless. He looks adorable. It's not easy. My first dog died 15 years ago I'm still heartbroken

I've cuddled my darlings four times now as they passed over the bridge, it's just the worst thing. But I KNEW every time that it was the right time. And I also know they'll be waiting for me there, with tennis balls, chewed up bits of strange things, and at least one revolting partially decomposed squirrel...

He loved dd with all his doggo heart and I am dreading having to tell her. She’s at her dad’s this weekend and he’s been her constant.

It is truly unfair they have such short lives compared to us. He was such a wonderful and loving pup. I’m so grateful he was ours.

So so sorry for the loss of your beautiful boy.

My Ted is now 4, he's a cocker/springer cross and I got him at 11 weeks old and he's been my best friend ever since.

He's been with me through crippling depression and anxiety, multiple miscarriages and the loss of my Nanna who raised me and I honestly think if I hadn't of had him to walk, to cuddle and to be by my side, I would of given up.

Take comfort in knowing you gave him the best life and lots of love 💕 sending hugs xx

Everything you wrote rang a bell, OP, I've got 2 spaniels.

Having to say goodbye is the worst worst part of being a dog owner.

The 'huffing' I know so well. Also the 'infuriating and hilarious'. How horrible this is happening to you. It hurts so much, but it's obvious you gave him a great life and I hope this will help you to get through. I think you know you took the right decision for him x
