JRT refusing to go in garden for late night wee

Since NYE firewworks, which he hates, DDog has been insisting on staying indoors after approx 5pm when he has a short walk for his ablutions, until the early hours of the morning when he wakes us up to go in the garden for a humongous wee. This means he is holding his wee for approx 9 hours! I'm worried about the impact this could have on his kidneys if it carries on much longer. He won't go for a walk around the block with us as an alternative solution, but scuttles off to his bed if he sees the lead come out. I've taken to standing in the garden pretending there issomething interesting going on and even missing like a cat to tempt him outside, but he just sits indoors watching me and waiting for me to go back in. Anyone else dealt with similar? Normally after fireworks he is back to normal after a couple of days

My JRT is not keen on our back garden at all unless I stand out there but will happily run out of our drive at the front. Luckily it's a quiet cul de sac with grass in the middle. She has a late evening walk with dh and he has taken to carrying her out of the door as she is not keen. His theory is she doesn't like the dark but she's fine at 6.30am when it is also dark. I shouldn't worry too much about 9 hours with no wee overnight? That's only 10pm-7am which seems reasonable.

I had a labrador who used to have to go for latest wees in the light fir a few weeks after fireworks.

My JRTx isn't bothered by fireworks but would very much prefer not to go out for late night wees. I pick her up and take her out. Can you not do that then walk in garden on lead? Lots of treats and praise for being happy to be in garden in the dark helped my lab get back to normal.

Could you also try changing his association with the garden after dark? Maybe get some high value treats (my dog love liver cake 🤢) and reward him for going in the garden. Maybe play with him out there - just make it a great place. do small sessions every night and maybe he will start to think of the garden differently and less of a stressful place

I also had a JRT who didn’t fancy a last wee! He was fairly elderly when we took him on and seriously grumpy, lots of grumbling if you tipped him out of bed and encouraged him out. The only way I got round it (too pregnant to pick him up in the end Grin) was to watch him really closely and learn what he wanted. I’m a night owl and would be asking him to go for a last wee about 11.30. Too late for grumpy dog, he preferred to make his way to bed around 9.30 and it was possibly to gently divert him to the back door if I intervened quickly. They’re funny old things aren’t they. Mind was very set in his ways, if you were 5 minutes late to feed him he’d lie by his bowl and give you the sad eyes.

My puppy, regularly holds it that long.. in fact unless forced at 10pm she'd try and hold it from about 5pm to 8am as she doesn't like night walks and won't wee in the garden! Her normal is a last wee at 10pm and then she won't go again until at least 8am even if offered.

Personally I'm just envious of her ability to not need a wee!

I dont think not having a wee for 9/10 hours is an issue , mine regularly has his last wee at 10 and doesn’t go out again until 9/10 in the morning . Have you tried putting a coat on him to take him out in the garden in the evening it may have a ‘thunder shirt’ effect if it’s fairly tight fitting like an equafleece .

Mine holds it longer than that, he seems to have a bladder of steel, but we have the opposite problem. There is a fox living at the end of our garden behind a fence in scrubland and if I let mine out late in the dark he won't come back in Smile he is in hunting mode and could stay there all night grrr

Thank you for all the suggestions. I will try high value treat rewards in the garden, but many of the ideas would be classed as 'mishandling' by his majesty, and result in growling or nipping if we persisted. I'm envious of those of you who can simply pick your dogs up and carry them outside! As if! He will only accept being lifted up if a) the other option is the vet picking him up or b) we need to get over a pool of very cold water at the bottom of the steps to the beach in winter, and the only other option is him getting his paws wet and cold.

Trying to put a coat on him would be classed as mishandling!

Our JRT hates being picked up - so we rarely do it, but if we did she wouldn't bite or growl- I'd be a bit concerned about that.

In your situation I'd put the lead on him and make him go out, again if he will growl or try to bite, I'd get some advice on how to stop him doing this.

How old is he because unless he is very old I’d be dealing with your handling issues .

He is a third time lucky rescue and we've had a lot of help with his behavioural issues, and he is a lot better on all fronts than he was 2.5 years ago when we got him, and we are still improving, and so is he. I think he may always be a challenge due to previous unknowable traumatic experiences.i was advised by our local dog whisperer who has worked wonders with us and him, that you have to allow a year of adjustment for each major changes in a dogs life, and I think there is truth in that. Nothing helps more as regards trust and bonding than passage of time coupled with consistent routines. This is him, waiting for the signal that it's bed time.

My dog did her last wee when we were out walking yesterday at about 4pm. She didn't wee again until around 10.30 this morning. I opened the back door for her at about 8.30 when I got up and she just looked at me but didn't go out.

She doesn't do that regularly but I went out at around 7 for an hour in the evening, she didn't wee before I left or after I came back and then she took herself off to bed while I was watching 'Question Time', so maybe just after 11 and wouldn't come down for a last wee; she normally has a last wee before bed at about 11.30 and regularly doesn't wee till about 10.30 the next day.

She small, so her bladder must be tiny but she seem to be able to go for an extraordinary length of time.

Nine hours is fine.
