Worming

Vets are telling me puppy doesn’t need a tapeworm wormer (eg panacur) as suggested by breeder at 12 weeks. We will be using nexgard for fleas and they say pups don’t need any additional wormer.
Any experience?

Wolfie when we registered BiteyDog at 8 weeks old we were just given advocate monthly and drontal every 6 months. When we swopped to Nexgard spectre it just replaced the advocate. I think the breeder used panacur but he would have had his last dose just before coming to us.

We now don't use drontal because it upsets his stomach. Interestingly when we discussed the pros and cons of using drontal the vet asked about what we fed him and said as we didn't feed raw (I know you raw feed) it also reduced the possible need for drontal.

Thing is breeder had been doing worm counts and giving wormer if needed. Next dose of panacur due weekend and vets say puppies can’t gwt tapeworm so they don’t need it. Why can’t puppies get it? I don’t understand. And yes I raw feed.

Following. Had mixed advice too.
Had either from vet at 8 weeks but told we didn’t need it till maybe 6m as he’s not raw fed and doesn’t scavenge etc.
We use advocate for flea / round worms.

Could you get a worm count yourself and then if it did come back positive then show it the vet to treat?

Or ask (phone) a different vet for clarification if you have more than one at your practice.

Bitey only managed to speak to receptionist. Sure the vet agreed to it in consultation. We were there an hour and pup couldn’t go on the floor so it was all a bit awkward.
Asked for vet to call. I don’t even know who could do a worm count. What company?? Not sure I fancy posting poo over new year!! Happy 2020.

I have seen companies online where they send you the 'kit' and you send it back.

The only reason I looked at them was because I was going to do one instead of giving BiteyDog the drontal but our vet actually said don't bother given that we treat for the majority of the worms anyway.

I recommend wormcount.com - fantastic company easy to do and easy to post honestly and really quick with emailing the results.

They also tell the type of tapeworm so you can specify exact treatment if required.

Wolfie can you let us know what the vet says when you call back. I find worming such a mindfield and if confuses me a lot!

Bitey If you give Nexguard spectra doesn't that cover everything except tapeworm? Drontal does not protect against tapeworm so why where you considering drontal?

Is the vet saying Wolfie that there is less chance of getting tapeworm if your dog does not have fleas as protected from nexguard?
So I guess that protects against the Dipylidium caninum tapeworm.

But the taenia pisiformis is the "rabbit tapeworm" and I guess could be ingested from raw food (although I thought it was killed by freezing?) or rodents when out walking.

Pondering here, so it is generally roundworm that causes the biggest issue and nexguard will protect against that?


I think it gets more confusing everyday! We need one product or just wormcount and then treat if needed as it is all seems to change so frequently

Call from vet.
I said I wanted some panacur for pup. He said ok.
Weird.
Panacur does protect against things that nexgard doesn’t.
We won’t use drontal as she’s just a little (over 15kg) baby puppy.
It is a minefield and everyone seems to do something different.

Yes I agree it's a minefield.

Maybe it just wasn't the usual thing hence the receptionist not recommending it but vet happy to prescribe if asked.

I found this which to me is interesting and sets it all out. Interestingly is says panacur does not cover D canis tapeworm - the ones from fleas - but your nexguard will Wolfie, if the article is correct.
