Help - dog ate chewing gum

We were on our nightly walk and he found a piece of chewing gum on the ground that I didn't even see. He chomped on it for a few seconds before my boyfriend got his hand in his mouth to pull it out. It took him two goes and (rather unhelpfully) he doesn't know if what he pulled out looked like all of it or if he swallowed any.

I've just looked it up as soon as we got home and found out certain types are poisonous and possibly fatal to dogs if they contain xylitol. I don't think he swallowed any, but I don't know for sure, and I don't know what kind it was (and so whether it would contain xylitol). Just been watching him when we got back and he seems ok, but I'm fretting between 'he almost certainly didn't swallow any so just keep an eye on him', and 'oh god but what if he did' and take him to the emergency vets.

I have zero perspective when it comes to the dog so can I please ask more clear minds what they would do in this circumstance?

I would get advice from an emergency vet, unless there’s one on here who happens to see your post

Same as PP if in doubt I phone the vets. If you are in the uk all vets will have an emergency number you can call even if it puts you through to a different vet practice that covers just out of hours.

They will advise over the phone or ask you to go in if they think it's an emergency.

Just wanted to pop back to say he is fine, thank you for. I called the emergency vets who were pretty much like "you can bring him in or not" which didn't help make a decision! Since it had already been over thirty minutes between the time he chewed it and getting him home from the walk, and looking it up online and he was showing no symptoms I sat up with him for a few hours watching him before going to bed. Got up with him this morning and he's been absolutely fine, although kept a very watchful eye on him on the walk this morning! Thank you for being someone to talk to when I was panicking last night.

Glad he is ok OP. A friend almost lost their dog last year when he ate a packet of chewing gum. They got him in just in time but he was unwell for days.

Glad he is ok. They do like to worry us.

Q for experienced owners.
I assuming that chewed gum on the floor ( as opposed to fresh out of the packet) is pretty low risk for xylitol toxicity ?
